The starting point for finding accommodation in Valparaiso is understanding that the most of the more interesting places are found up on the hills and are usually small, family run B&B's. So, generally speaking, forget about the private bathrooms! We thoroughly enjoyed our few days stay with Renee (the owner) and he certainly does his best to give you the low-down on how to tackle the area. He offers a few excursions (trekking, horseback riding) himself as well, which we didn't take up. His breakfasts in the shared kitchen are legendary and we certainly didn't have any complaints. The location is very central, about a 10 minute pull up Cerro Alegre. The main downsides are that the decor of the place is tired and the rooms and shared bathroom are very basic - the bath itself being probably the worst we have ever seen! But these are small gripes - it's quite a fun place to stay and Renee is an engaging host who speaks perfect English.
