“A good place to relax in the Andes”

Termas de Papallacta

Mostly excellent, a great place to relax. If you stay in the hotel, each of the complexes of maybe 10 room has its own series of hot pools and a cool one. Well appointed rooms, comfortable beds. The restaurant was above-average, the trout excellent. The scenery magnificent. Be aware that Papallacta sits at 10,800 feet so you may need some time to acclimate, watch out when getting out of the hot pools and do it gradually. There is an incredible volcano, Antisana covered perpetually with snow that you can see when the weather is clear. Our one problem was one night there was a group of drunken Russians in the pool, yelling loudly and making it impossible to go to sleep. We called the front desk and got no answer, then went there and found it closed. Eventually we roused a security guard who got someone who could change our room to another, quieter one. The loud guests were not the fault of the hotel, but it was scary to know that if a real emergency had come up, it would have been very hard to get help, which is why I am deducting one star.

If you are going to Ecuador, you absolutely must make the trip to Termas Papallacta. It is wonderful in every way and a true bargain. For 90 USD/night we enjoyed wonderful hot and cold mineral springs outside our door in a picture perfect setting. The reception area is gorgeous and the staff accomodating and all English speaking. There are many free hiking trails around the property and for 6 USD you can take a great guided hike with an informative guide-I highly recommned this.
Frommer's guide book states that the breakfast is included-it is not and on the weekends your only option is a very fair buffet. I sugges going down the road to one of the very cheap and delicious restaurants that you can walk to-or wait for lunch. For 7 USD the buffet is not worth it. The restaurants for lunch and dinner, though, are a great bargain and very very good.
the rooms are rustic, but comfortable. They could use a bit of updated bed lines, but other than that, they are very cute and cabin-y.
The spa at Termas is outstanding. The treatments are top quality and cheap as can be.
They have wireless internet access also-however it is not free.
Don't miss Termas Papallacta-you will loveit.

Like much else in Ecuador, this hotel has incredible potential. All the raw ingredients are there, but it needs some fine turning and a manager with a zeal for service. My wife and I were set for a weekend
of bliss and well deserved rest. All was well, until the family checked in the room right next to us. Instantly we were hurtled through time and space to a sea-side Ramada at Daytona Beach, replete
with screams, splashing, and the thud of running feet. This went on into the evening and commenced promptly at 0600 the next morning.

The spa was great, but I had to ask for assistance in quieting two hotel employees who insisted on having a long, very loud conversation
right outside the massage room door.

Food was average but service was slow, especially trying to get the bill at the end of the meal.

Overall, I'd rate our experience a "C+", but with a little work and attention to detail it could easily be an "A+".

My friend and I stayed here for 2 days after a trip to Galapagos, and I would highly recommend this place for a rest after after such an adventure. The spa arranged transportation for the 2 of us from Quito, r/t for 100 usd. The treatments were about 1/4 of what I pay in NY so I indulged in several. The hot thermal pool right outside our room was wonderful at night. We bought several beautiful handmade llama wool sweaters from the sweater lady right outside the entrance for 18 usd each and I wish I had bought more. The food was adequate, not great, but the coffee was wonderful! It is quite high up in the mountains, so the altitude slowed us down a bit.
There is a doctor on site who will take your blood pressure and give you asprin or cough syrup for free and fix you up. You can see a video in my profile of the place if you would like. I thought that 2 days here was just perfect before returning to NY.
It was really quite beautiful and the staff could not have been nicer!

This is an excellent location to get away from it all. The environment is peaceful and relaxing. The Spa is well appointed, with a vast selection of hot spring pools, more private than the public ones available. Loved Room No. 27 with a direct view to the 14K foot mountain, AntiSana with immediate access to the pools. The restuarant is okay and we recommend you bring some delightful items and wine to enjoy your tranquil setting. Though the room did not have a fireplace, you can request in advance for a heater to be place in your room. It's not tropical, so you need to be prepared for cooler weather. There is great hiking in the area, including a national park. It is only 1.5 hourse from Quito and it is a highly recommended detour. Don't miss it, especially if you enjoy relaxing and the outdoors.
