My wife and I stayed at Casa Arequipa a total of four nights in September, 2007. Three nights were consecutive while we toured Arequipa and one was on our return from a brief excursion to the Colca Canyon. We recommend Casa Arequipa very highly to anyone who likes accommodations with character, service, and value. It was one of our favorite hotels during our month trip to Peru.
We were somewhat concerned when we booked that the Casa Arequipa is about 1 mile from the town center, located in a quiet upscale residential neighborhood. However, being out from the center was not a problem – taxi’s were plentiful and cheap ($1 each way), and the staff would call one for us when we went into town and we either caught a taxi at the Plaza or had the restaurant call for one. It was just a very short ride each way or about a 15-minute walk.
The hotel is a beautifully restored and converted mansion with just six rooms. Ours (#2) was on the ground floor off the lounge area. It was very large, with two extremely comfortable double beds, a sitting area with a couch and upholstered chair, a large antique armoire, tv and minibar. The room was very tastefully decorated.
Our attractively tiled bathroom was somewhat small but adequate, with shower only. There was a single pedestal sink and not much counter space.
The large common area adjoining our room was open two stories with a large skylight. The mansion’s dining room served as the breakfast area, which was excellent – juice, fruit, rolls, and eggs on request.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the hotel was the incredibly friendly, helpful, and efficient staff. They seemed sincerely concerned with us and with our comfort, and went out of their way to make our stay in Arequipa and in Peru enjoyable. It truly made a difference for us, even though we’re not ones who demand (or even like) attentive service usually. All in all, it made staying at the Casa Arequipa the most comfortable and enjoyable hotel experience of our trip.
