(1) The rooms: Sadly, it is not just the interior rooms at the Olivar which are musty.... we had an outside room overlooking a lovely park which reeked of mold and mildew. After sleeping here, my husband had a sore throat and headache from the awful, thick cave-like air. Very noisy as well. The rooms facing the park are those over the hotel's driveway (we were on the 5th floor) and the honking of the cars coming to and from the hotel was constant. Constant car alarms could be heard, too (all of this with windows closed). Our room was small and awkwardly laid out with drab brown and rust decor (see photo w/ prior post. The "inside" room there looked exactly like our outside room overlooking the park).
(2) Service was hit and miss. For example: seeing no sign with the hotel's name, I asked a doorman on my way in, "What is the name of this hotel?" He smiled and said "si" so I asked him the name of the hotel in Spanish. He responded by shrugging and walking off. Also annoying is the fact that the hotel either owns or is affiliated with a car service. When you seek a taxi, they send you to the car service which is much higher than a non-affiliated taxi. No other taxis seem to be allowed onto the property. These car service drivers will try to sell you on using them on an hourly basis or for a tour which will end up costing more than they estimate at the beginning.
(3) This was $200 a night?!?! Why didn't we stay at the Marriott overlooking the Pacific??? Arghhh!!!
(4) High spots: the sushi restaurant downstairs is FABULOUS: fresh, friendly and well run. Bell service with bags was prompt at this hotel. It is close to restaurants, embassies and some financial services. Everyone apparantly gets 2 drink vouchers on check in. The roof top pool area is very nice (too cold now to swim but we had our complimentary drinks up there and enjoyed the view).
