I am writing this review in Holliday Inn itself, at the end of my stay.
Concerning the service, it is not good; I’ll list a few things that happened to me:
1.They say (at the website) that all rooms have internet. Well, mine didn’t. I had to come down to the lobby to use wireless connection (probably from the neighbor). When I told the reception guy that my room didn’t have internet, he said that I had to book a room with internet in advance – than when I said that they advertise that all rooms have internet access, he said that just a few rooms don’t have it, and if mine doesn’t he couldn’t do anything. He also said that I had to get down to the lobby to use one of the computers from the hotels’ little cyber cafe (but I work with my laptop, have all my stuff in it, etc…)
2.The hotel didn’t do anything for news year evening – no big deal, but when asked about what to do all the information I got was: well, everybody leaves Montevideo at new years evening, and those who don’t leave it, stay with their families. I went to Sheraton and booked a table for news year evening. Around 9:50 PM I called the reception asking for a taxi and the answer I got: “there aren’t taxis anymore”. I explained that I had to go to Sheraton, had already paid for the party, if he could try a little harder, and the answer: “I try to call and the line is busy, sorry but I can’t do anything”. I went to the reception myself and asked the guy to try again, and suddenly: he got a cab.
3.When trying to connect my laptop at the lobby, I asked the hotels personnel if they could find me a near place to a power supply, the answer again: “Sorry, there are no power supplies here”. Then I found one myself.
4.I got back from a tour, tired, my wife wanted to use the toilet and when we got to the room our keycards weren’t working. We had to get down to the lobby and wait so that the only guy at the reception could reprogram the card while attending other people.
I don’t know if they were in a bad mood because they had to work at the holiday time, but in general they were so not-polite.
Concerning the room: it is old, scruffy and grubby, yes. The furniture is old, the bathroom is very small and dark, as well as the room itself. Even with all the lamps turned on the room is still dark; they’re probably trying to save some money from electricity. The stream of hot water from the shower was also very week.
The pool is ok, but nothing astonishing. The solarium is a little 5 X 5 meters place near the pool at the roof, not pretty, but one can sunbath. The sauna was a little dirty, but works.
For the price could be worthy if it wasn’t the bad service and the poor conservation.
I strongly advise travelers to go to other hotels of the same price, just to name one: NH Continental. Better service and conservation, not too far away from Ciudad Vieja or even not far from H I itself. If you can afford, go to Sheraton, Melia or Radisson.
