“Yes, scruffy and grubby H I.”

Holiday Inn Montevideo

I am writing this review in Holliday Inn itself, at the end of my stay.

Concerning the service, it is not good; I’ll list a few things that happened to me:
1.They say (at the website) that all rooms have internet. Well, mine didn’t. I had to come down to the lobby to use wireless connection (probably from the neighbor). When I told the reception guy that my room didn’t have internet, he said that I had to book a room with internet in advance – than when I said that they advertise that all rooms have internet access, he said that just a few rooms don’t have it, and if mine doesn’t he couldn’t do anything. He also said that I had to get down to the lobby to use one of the computers from the hotels’ little cyber cafe (but I work with my laptop, have all my stuff in it, etc…)
2.The hotel didn’t do anything for news year evening – no big deal, but when asked about what to do all the information I got was: well, everybody leaves Montevideo at new years evening, and those who don’t leave it, stay with their families. I went to Sheraton and booked a table for news year evening. Around 9:50 PM I called the reception asking for a taxi and the answer I got: “there aren’t taxis anymore”. I explained that I had to go to Sheraton, had already paid for the party, if he could try a little harder, and the answer: “I try to call and the line is busy, sorry but I can’t do anything”. I went to the reception myself and asked the guy to try again, and suddenly: he got a cab.
3.When trying to connect my laptop at the lobby, I asked the hotels personnel if they could find me a near place to a power supply, the answer again: “Sorry, there are no power supplies here”. Then I found one myself.
4.I got back from a tour, tired, my wife wanted to use the toilet and when we got to the room our keycards weren’t working. We had to get down to the lobby and wait so that the only guy at the reception could reprogram the card while attending other people.
I don’t know if they were in a bad mood because they had to work at the holiday time, but in general they were so not-polite.

Concerning the room: it is old, scruffy and grubby, yes. The furniture is old, the bathroom is very small and dark, as well as the room itself. Even with all the lamps turned on the room is still dark; they’re probably trying to save some money from electricity. The stream of hot water from the shower was also very week.

The pool is ok, but nothing astonishing. The solarium is a little 5 X 5 meters place near the pool at the roof, not pretty, but one can sunbath. The sauna was a little dirty, but works.

For the price could be worthy if it wasn’t the bad service and the poor conservation.

I strongly advise travelers to go to other hotels of the same price, just to name one: NH Continental. Better service and conservation, not too far away from Ciudad Vieja or even not far from H I itself. If you can afford, go to Sheraton, Melia or Radisson.

H I Montevideo was my first stop in a mini whirlwind tour of a few cities in South America. I saw neither scruffy nor grubby. I felt I got value for my money.

I paid for a diplomatic suite online, in advance, but when I arrived in mid-August, they did not have my reservation. Problems with central reservation, they explained. I had anticipated this because of a previous review and had taken a copy of the reservation information with me. They honoured the online rate, which was VASTLY different from the walk in rate, as it seems to be throughout all South America! I had to pay at the hotel, but in the end my credit card had not been charged by central reservations. Since I was a non-Uruguayan resident holding a foreign travel document I was exempt from paying hotel taxes.

The lobby seemed small, so I asked to see the rooms before registering ( to decide whether or not to upgrade). They were quite accommodating and I was able to view the room. It was very cozy but in my estimation only reasonable for the online rate. Please bear in mind that this was the diplomatic suite. I think the regular rooms would be much smaller! There was a tiny sitting area with a pull-out sofa bed, table, TV, fridge etc. which led to a bedroom ...quite comfy for two. The third person would use the pullout sofa. In my estimation, the Diplomatic suite may be tight for three depending on the length of stay. An upgrade then would be better as the Presidential Suite is much more spacious and has a jacuzzi as well. Breakfast was good and was included in the room rate. I had dinner at a restaurant near to the hotel. I enjoyed myself just imbibing the local ambience.

The hotel was able to book me on a tour of Montevideo, which was great, as I did not have much time in the city. The tour bus picked me up at the hotel and dropped me off there at the end of the tour. I would have no objections to staying at H. I. again as I did not have any major problems and the staff also spoke English so communicating was easy, but I probably would want to experience another hotel. There are restaurants, shops and cambios within walking distance or a short cab ride away from the hotel. Change just enough money at the airport to pay the SHUTTLE BUS to get you to your hotel as well as to tip the driver. The rate at the cambio is MUCH better. Enjoy your stay!

    • Liked — It was cozy and the price was right
    • Disliked — They didn't have two double beds! Seems few hotels in South America do.
    • Tips/Secrets: — Book online for the less expensive rate. They honoured mine.

“Scruffy, not too clean and huge Holiday Inn billing problems”

This is an ageing downtown Holiday Inn in central Montevideo. Carpets and furnishings are grubby and worn, which said it may be as good as it gets in Montevideo... But our biggest problem was with the hotel and Holiday Inns inability to communicate on billings. We booked our room as a 14 day advance purchase and rceived a confirmation email that said our credit card would be charged between booking and arrival, which was fine. When we got to the hotel we"d been travelling S America for a month with no ability to check our credit card billings, and were surprised when the clerk billed us again and told us HI US wouldn"t give him our credit card security code...
Sounded suspiciously like a S American scam, so we called HI Reservations = Wendy in Salt Lake = who was totally unhelpful, said she knew nothing about security codes and suggested, as though we were talking about a hotel in Seattle not Uruguay = that if the hotel said they hadn"t billed it they obvioulsy hadn"t.
Clearly never travelled outside the US
If you must stay here, don"t book through Holiday Inn website...

“Great stay at the Holiday”

The rooms are spacious and modern with plenty of amenities. The king-size beds were very comfortable.
Our group of five had two rooms, a king superior room and a diplomatic suite. Total cost was less than $150 USD, and the suite had a Jacuzzi.
Breakfast buffet had a good selection of fruit, juice, cold cereal, ham, cheese, pastries, beverages, but no omelettes, pancakes, or other meats were available.
Location is across from Casino (which is comparable to a small downtown Las Vegas Casino).
Just a short walk from a large weekend flea market.
Alvaro and William at the reception desk spoke good English and were very helpful arranging sightseeing and transportation back to airport.
