I can second most of the positive reviews written about the hotel. We found the staff to be quite nice although we didn't seem to get some messages. Even though we arrived around 11 PM we still were offered some champagne at the bar which should have closed and enjoyed the long conversation with the barman. There was a large TV there (good for a tennis tournament on then). True,,, the gym facilities were not good and the pool ..like a big bathtub..
Rooms are quiet, great being across from the golf course (fabulous birds there,,..walk over there even if you don't play..like a bird park). Walks along the beach were nice but there was a problem with mosquitos at the time.. some rare species immune to the cold but not dangerous...Breakfast room and restaurant were the same and quite nice in decor,etc....
We had 2 large double beds and they were excellent..
BAthroom OK but no bathtub...
The location is excellent.. nice restaurants and shopping, practically on the water and quiet.... easy to take cabs to the city.

This is a nice hotel in a nice location away from the rather noisy and a bit dirty central city and "old city," and just a few blocks from the ocean front. The staff was pleasant and helpful if a little lacking in professionalism (groups of staff were frequently hanging around the lobby and joking). Except for the somewhat tired looking restaurant/breakfast room and rooftop "gym" & pool, the hotel was in good repair inside and out.

The room was clean and moderately spacious. We were given a 2nd floor non-smoking room that looked out on nothing but the backs of other buildings. If you want a view, you'll have to get at least up to the 6th floor. I am not sure, but I think the upper floors are smoking floors and the lower ones non-smoking. The air conditioning could barely keep pace with the heat and humidity. The bed and pillows were quite comfortable. The shower good.

There are good restaurants nearby.

For U$80/night including tax, the room was just ok value.

“This hotel fails to disappoint”

The Meliá Confort hotel resides in the peaceful and lovely residential area of Punta Carretas. Spectacular views from the top of the hotel (as I have uploaded) show the picturesque golf across the road, city centre further beyond that and the sea (River Plate) looking south. The Punta Carretas shopping center (with Sheraton adjoined) is a 2 minute walk down the end of the street from the hotel. A further five minute walk from there will take you down to the promenade along the water front with bars and nice apartment blocks – a pleasant stroll (albeit somewhat windy).

We booked directly online at the official Sol Meliá site and paid US $80/night (including taxes) which seemed good value in itself. Received booking confirmation by email within 5 hours and experienced no problems with check-in at hotel. Encountered friendly and receptive staff and native speaker of English shouldn’t have anything to fear staying here.

This hotel I believe was built around 2000 and still seems new. Everything in the hotel was spotless and even had a nice scent about the hotel.

Rooms were spacious and in immaculate order. Bed was large and comfortable and air conditioning was powerful. Free, high-speed Internet access in the room (cable) was very good (Wi-Fi in lobby and bar areas and two computers in business center). Bathroom was very clean and tidy with a great shower. TV swiveled for viewing in bed or from the couch (very practical) with many channels available but the BBC was the only English speaking news channel I came across.

Fitness center at top of hotel was well equipped and boasted lovely views looking out to sea. A small heated pool (inside) was also located in this area.

Thoughtful gestures like putting a daily bulletin of weather information, front page copies of five major papers (including NY Times) in the lobby, a welcoming drink in the bar and a ‘goodnight’ chocolate on our bed after our room was made, literally went down well with us.

Hotel breakfast was excellent; plenty of juices, fruits, cereals, hot stuff and cakes etc to be had.

Hotel offers an extended check-out until 6pm for $20 (which we accepted) and even then, they allowed us to check-out at 7pm at no further charge when we asked.

A potential downside with this hotel might be its location from city. I have stayed once before in Montevideo right in town and now here and I would not hesitate staying at this hotel (and location) again. It’s much cleaner, nicer and quieter out there with a good mall close by. I really can’t see anyone being at a disadvantage staying here in this location. Cabs are quite cheap to move about town also.

The upshot is this hotel offers exceptional value – namely for the quality of the hotel and services/amenities provided at this price. I really struggle to find a fault with this hotel and confidently give this hotel my highest personal recommendation based on what I experienced on my 5 night stay here.

“A really nice hotel”

Tryp Montevideo

4 of 5 stars

Although this hotel is not in the touristy part of Montevideo, I found that to be a plus. It's in a charming, quiet neigborhood setting with well kept houses and apartments around it, and a golf course right across the street. It's only one block away from a major shopping mall that contains restaurants, boutiques and major department stores. You can also find ATMs and a grocery store in there as well. When you want to go sight-seeing you can take a quick, cheap taxi ride into town.

The hotel has a modern decor with large, bright, spacious rooms. Our room had a sitting area with a sofa and desk. The TV was atop a dresser and swiveled so that it could be viewed from either the bed or the sofa. The room also contained a safe and minbar.

The room was clean and comfortable and the bathroom was modern and provided plenty of hot water. There was only a large shower stall, however--no bathtub.

Off the lobby, there's a small but cheerful modern room with a computer for free internet access. There's also a nice dining room where a breakfast buffet is served in the mornings, and then it becomes a restaurant at night.

“Nice hotel”

The hotel is well located in the Pocitos residential district. Maybe a bit far from downtown, but very close to the Punta Carretas mall and the Parque Rodo golf course.
Ideal for business travellers, modern rooms, satellite TV, internet with an small but complete business center.
Breakfast is nice, continental style. Juices, croissants, coffee, tea. The spa is not the strong point of the hotel, perhaps because of their guest target, businessmen with no time to swim, or take a massage sesion. It is located on the top floor of the hotel, with a nice panorama of the montevideo bay. The pool is very small, but noone seems to use it, even if it is clean and in excellent use conditions.
Staff people is very helpful and friendly, the provided us (my wife and me) with maps of the city, they suggest places to visit, etc
The only question is not with the hotel, but with its location: It is far away from downtown, from the "ciudad vieja", the most pinturesque and touristic site of Montevideo and, also, the business and financial district. Of course, with cabs you are close to everyplace. The hotel was fine.
