“A Good Place to Stay”

Cala di Volpe Boutique Hotel

4 of 5 stars
Montevideo, Uruguay

The Cala di Volpe is the place to stay for tourists who want value for their money and can live without the bells and whistles major hotel chains may offer. We can recommend this hotel because we live in Montevideo and stayed here once when workmen performed maintenance on our dwelling. We also have relatives who stay here when they visit us. In addition, my company has made reservations for business contacts to stay at the Cala di Volpe. .

On the plus side, the rooms are nice. Try to get a suite, usually on a higher floor. These aren't huge, but they are a bit bigger than standard rooms and are decidely more comfortable. Room prices usually include a good buffet breakfast. The restaurant offers a good selection and includes local favorites, like "locro stew,"usually served during the winter. During certain months of the year, the hotel gives an afternoon tea.

Be aware that service in Montevideo, while polite, is often slow. People here are not rushed. Accordingly, the drink you order in the hotel restaurant can take a half hour to arrive, even if you are the sole patron. Dinner may well take a lot longer. I attribute this to culture as well as "multitasking." At least the staff is friendly.

The Cala di Volpe offers a lovely view of the ocean-like Rio de la Plata, and the Ramblas, a pedestrian path along the river which the whole city seems to use to bike ride, jog, walk, or picnic. The hotel is located in the middle class neighborhood called Positos. A nice steakhouse called La Perdiz (the Quail) is a two block walk from the hotel and a shopping mall is 4 blocks away. One kilometer brings you to the golf course.

If you don't mind a small pool and gym, you will like the Cala di Volpe. Travelers arriving from Buenos Aires who travel on a Buqubus ferry boat should contact that company about packages that may included more favorable hotel rates.

“Great Hotel”

We stayed here 2 nights and thought this was a great hotel. The front desk was very helpful and the location was great. It's not the city center but it's a very affluent part of Montevideo and is right on the ocean/river and a short walk to some nice beaches. We took some very nice walks along the Rambla and also walked to the Punta Carretas mall which was only a few blocks away. We ate at La Perdiz, also a short walk, and had a great meal. The croquettes de lomo (tenderloin skewer with peppers and onions) was wonderful. The rooms were a little small but nice and clean. Breakfast every morning was nice and we also had the afternoon tea one day which was also good. I would definitely stay here again.

“Not the best....”

Cala di Volpe is situated on the esplanade, a few kilometres from the centre of Montevideo. It's well positioned for a local shopping centre and we had a couple of bracing walks along the sea front. We even braved the walk from the centre of the city back to the hotel on our last morning - it took just over an hour.

The hotel is fine, but we didn't think it particularly special. The staff were friendly and the room and facilities were fine. We ate at the hotel on our first night and we weren't very impressed with the meal - perhaps the regular chef had a night off!

The main problem we had was that we had prepaid for the accommodation through an agency (dilos) and the hotel refused to honour this, insisting that we pay again for the room. I have since tried to contact the agency and also emailed the hotel to express our frustration - but have heard from neither, which is disappointing.

“Not so upscale - Better options”

Cala di Volpe Boutique Hotel

I just got back from a stay at this hotel. I’ve been to Montevideo several times for business and relax holiday weekends. To be honest, I’ve never even heard of this hotel before. I did some research on TripAdvisor to find some options with views from the Rambla. This came up as a top choice.

I’ve stayed at other hotels before including the NH Colombia, Radisson and the Sheraton. There aren’t too many options in Montevideo for high end hotels. I booked online on Expedia.com which had the same rate as a few other online sites. A corner suite was u$s 160/night + taxes. I went ahead and booked it.

The hotel was in a great area on the Rambla. I arrived with my car on Buquebus from Buenos Aires and it was very uneventful and easy. The hotel allowed me and my girlfriend to check-in early at 11 AM. The staff was very friendly. The lobby was ok and had a restaurant off to the right when you walk in. I never saw it busy during my stay.

When we got to the room frankly I was a bit disappointed as it’s not really high end. The view was indeed great from the room but that’s about all that was nice. The room was Freezing cold when we arrived. The décor is not that great and the bed and pillows weren’t comfortable. The finish out on things isn’t anything to write home about. The welcome guide said free internet was included and there was a computer in the room which was nice but then I discovered that the computer couldn’t be used for the internet without paying u$s 15 per day. Fortunately I had my laptop as the “free internet access” was wi-fi but the signal was very very weak so I only got a weak signal 2 times and gave up during my stay.

I hate writing negative reviews and you can see that all my reviews are typically positive on Trip Advisor but I wanted to provide a realistic post as some of the posts are not too accurate on this hotel. I’m posting very objectively.

Definitely, my recent stay at the Sheraton Hotel in Montevideo last month was much better and their rooms are higher end. No view like this but the hotel is higher end for the same price. Same thing with the Radisson which is about the same price yet is much nicer.

The staff was friendly. We ordered room service one day and the service was quick but the sandwiches we ordered were cold. The French fries were great and so was the soup but for some reason the 2 sandwiches we ordered were cold.

If a good view is a MUST then I’d recommend it but if an overall upscale hotel stay is your goal, there are better options in Montevideo.

“Hard to Beat!”

The Cala di Volpe Boutique Hotel is excellent. We’re staying here now and extended our stay because of our pleasant experience with this hotel and the city of Montevideo. Hotel is right on the active beach front very near the Punta Carretas shopping and a 10 minute taxi ride to the Ciudad Vieja. The staff here is exceptionally nice. We stayed in an executive (mini) suite with two walls of windows on the top floor for US $150 per night. Hard to beat!
