We had booked 3 nights at this Resort. We were staying in 4 different hotels in Laos and Cambodia and due to our budget could only afford to "splurge" in one hotel. We had decided this would be our splurge so we booked a suite at $248 per night. We were very disappointed. It was the most expensive of the places we booked but all the other hotels far exceeded it in standards, quality, service, ambiance and location.
The hotel is about 6-7 miles from town, down a rutted dirt road. It is not by the river, has little ambiance and is in the middle of nowhere. There is shuttle service to town but you you cannot walk to restaurants, the markets, to get a drink or to get foot massages. You are really stuck with their restaurant and services and are away from everything the town of Luang Prabang has to offer..
The suite did have two rooms but they were both very small. The bedroom barely had enough room to walk around the bed. The bathroom was however quite lovely. The size of the two rooms combined was about the same size as a good sized standard hotel room.
The furniture in the rooms was dusty and old looking. The room looked very "tired." It was quite unimpressive. More the style of furniture I would expect in a Motel 6.
We have traveled through south east Asia extensively so when not in a major city like Bangkok I had not expected the same quality for a hotel as I would in a major city. However, a price of $248 for a suite at this hotel was way over priced (the regular rooms were much less expensive) and the resort very disappointing.
The grounds were not the "luscious grounds" we expected. We were there at the end of the rainy season (mid October) and would have expected it to have been rather lush but the grounds looked like they needed a lot of TLC.
We did not find the staff friendly. They were not rude, just no effort toward real service and rather disinterested in assisting guests. They all spoke very limited English so it made communicating more difficult. We spoke with them about our dissatisfaction with the room, especially given the cost, and they were quite unconcerned and did not offer suggestions to resolve our concerns. The staff really needs some customer service training.
After contacting the agent we had used to book the place and after firmly voicing our dissatisfaction we were finally moved to Villa Santi Hotel, in the town of Luang Prabang, and were happier. See my review of the Hotel.
There had previously been a review posting on this site in September from someone who had booked 4 nights and checked out after one but it seems to have "disappeared." When I read it a month before I left, I had contacted our booking agent who dissuaded me from changing hotels. I wish I had followed the advice of that reviewer.
Everyone is looking for something different when he or she travels. There might be some travelers who would enjoy this place, but if you book it, expect a low 3 star experience that is away from all the activity with only moderate service. We are middle aged (49) and found the location too far away from all the things we came to Luang Prabang to see. Perhaps if you want a place away from all the action this might be a good location for you.
