Our 3rd year in a row (husband, daughter and myself) to this business orientated hotel - so it must be good!
We stayed in Royal Club again - the benefits of this can't be overstated - breakfast, afternoon tea, drinks, canapes, fruit and canapes in our room daily. The hotel was good enough to give us an adjoining suite with camp bed, fridge, WC and sink for our teenage daughter complete with lovely terrace - unexpected and a real treat. Rooms in RC are outdated somewhat in terms of decor and size of bathroom but are spotless and everything you need is there - tea, coffee, iron, bathrobes, slippers. We also got our transfers to and from the airport seamlessly and benefited from a late check-out till 10pm on the day of our midnight flight home - this was again a superb gesture by the hotel who said it was because we had to wait (all of) a couple of hours to check-in after our 7am arrival! They did not have to do that and these things are much appreciated.
One of the main benefits of this hotel are the excellent on-site restaurants - a look at the latest Timeout Awards/recommendations for 2008 will show a number of Le Meridien eateries highly thought of. It really is great to be able just to stroll out from your room to eat at night (usually outdoor dining available which we love) without having to go through the (admittedly) improving traffic system in Dubai. This year we enjoyed Sukhothai, the Asian buffet which was tremendous value, Aussie BBQ at Yalumba, Casa Mia and Long Yin. Hubby also went to the popular Dubliners to watch footie. The layout of the hotel means that while some of the venues get very popular with guests in the evenings, this does not impact in any way on general public areas or rooms.
The pool areas are still spotless and seldom crowded and very tranquil which after a day at the sister hotel Mina Seyahi we really appreciated - that place was too busy and far too full! Indeed, the day we visited, they were advising people that access to the beach/pool was closed to non-residents - like other hotels on the beach, their arrangements with other apartments/hotels to allow day guests seem to be causing issues.
Service at the pool bars seemed to be a little less efficient in previous years - there seemed to be a number of new staff and we sometimes had to request drinks a couple of times before they arrived. Having said that, staff generally in the hotel were as helpful and friendly as ever.
We did not avail ourselves of tennis facilities this year but went for beauty treatments and used the complimentary shuttle bus to Deira City Centre Mall.
We all noticed more airport noise this year - but not all the time - whether or not, there is some kind of noice cancellation operating at certain times, I'm not sure. However, despite its proximity to the airport (which is great when travelling), noise is not loud enough to be detrimental to your stay.
Guests are a mix of business travellers, locals dining or having business meetings, a lesser amount of families and couples of all ages. It really does cater for each group of people - children are made welcome.
On reflection despite the myriad of hotel options in Dubai, we still like the location of this hotel - it offers good access to the creek area/eastern side of Sheik Zayhid Road and is very peaceful at a reasonable rate. You can still make trips to the beach/marina (with day passes at a small fee available for the sister Meridiens) but the relaxation factor that comes with staying in this reasonably priced hotel adds so much to its value.
We will very probably be back and will look forward to a high level of service and quality dining again.
