“One Memorable New Year's”

Dr. Jonathan Pitney House

Although we are seasoned travelers, this was our first experience at a B&B…

We spent 2 nights at the Pitney House for New Year's Eve. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a warm smile by Don, the Innkeeper. He escorted us to our room and took time to point out all of the various antiques in the room and the warm gas fireplace.

The room: Water spots on the ceiling, dust bunnies under the bed, stains on the comforter, squeaky mattress, 3 out of 5 lamps did not work, 2 electronic candles lay on the floor with no bulb.

The Bathroom: Clean mirror, nice assortment of toiletries, outdated shower head with piercing streams of water, no control of shower water temperature, years worth of mildew growth on shower curtains that rested in the base of the tub, dirty bathroom rug that may have been used by Dr. Pitney.

If you are allergic or do not care for cats, please be mindful that there is a resident cat that roams freely around the house.

The evening reception was a pleasant surprise. We were offered a nice spread of shrimp cocktail, steak wrapped in bacon, stuffed peppers, strawberries, cheese fondue, mini cheesecakes & pecan pies, and unlimited quantity of white and red wine.

After returning from a night in town, we retired to our room. It was a restless night with nonstop traffic. Instead of counting sheep we were counting cars driving by. Light or heavy sleeper beware, the sounds echoes throughout the room.

The next morning at breakfast one of the couples noted that they also had trouble sleeping over excessive traffic. The husband stated that they were playing a game “Guess that engine.”

For breakfast we were offered: orange juice, coffee or tea, a large bakery muffin (not homemade), fresh strawberries in yogurt, pork sausage patty, and four cheese egg bake with a side of salsa. I might have enjoyed the egg bake if it weren’t for the large strand of hair laced through it. Aside from that, all food was served hot and promptly. It appeared that all food was purchased from an off site catering company and is no longer homemade.

For New Year’s Eve, Don left several bottles of white and red Argentinean wine with bottle openers for each couple in the dining room. Contrary to the website, the wine is not from a local winery.

The Pitney House is about a 15 minute drive to AC. $70 cab ride round trip.

Overall, we had a pleasant stay at the Pitney House largely due to Don Kelley’s hospitality and kindness. He is a great host; unfortunately, the house requires intense cleaning and maintenance. Based on Don’s attentiveness and willingness to please we would consider returning.

“I'd like to like this, but . . .”

Dr. Jonathan Pitney House

I'd like to like this, but I have serious reservations (pun intended). I just read reviews posted over the period we stayed there and I don't believe them. It's clear that a huge effort has gone into refurbishing this old house and that there's a lot of history in it. However, the breakfasts were too sweet (we had "French toast" two days in a row--and every day there's a huge sugary muffin offered along with fruit juice--at one point the host refused to reheat someone's cold soggy french toast) and the rooms were not carefully cleaned (dirt on windowsills, huge drollops of dust on ceiling fan blades) or appointed (pillowcases didn't cover pillows and covers were shabby). The halls were gloomy (night light not replaced) and the rooms were dark--in the evening the living room had the lights out and was uninviting. The prices, however, were the usual shore prices. Stay at the Motel Six for $49 instead of here until this genial owner gets his act together. This may sound harsh, but we were very disappointed in this place.

“wonderful stay at the Pitney House! A+”

This was our very first stay in a bed and breakfast and I can only hope that all of them are as nice as the inn run by Mr. Kelly. He was very hospitable and the inn is lovely.
I booked the Pitney House because their prices were very competative if not better then the local hotels in the area. I read some reviews of area hotels to make an comparative and informed decision on where to stay. I felt very comfortable after chatting with Mr. Kelly on the phone. The website he has for the Pitney house is very informative and makes a very good impression for an already nice establishment.
I was and am very pleased with my overall experience. I would not hesitate to recommend Mr. Kelly's inn at the Pitney House. It was a lovely stay.

“Comfortable Quarters”

Easy to find, this historic property consists of a mansion filled with antiques and valuable paintings (or copies thereof), and a classic contemporary duplex carriage house, also very tastefully decorated with that early American look. The jacuzzi tub might interest some. Plenty of towels and quilts. We were permitted to bring our dog. A pet friendly forum. Neighborhood is very quiet. As we were in town for the wedding of the season, we treated the rooms as one would expect--a wonderful retreat to welcome us at the end of the day. The host is intelligent and available, and cooks up a tasty breakfast. Nice to be in the house where once lived the man who invented Atlantic City.
