“BEWARE!!! This hotel is Horrible Horrible Horrible!!!!!”

Howard Johnson Inn Atlantic City

Oct 8, 2007

This was my worst hotel experience in my 32 years. We paid $257 for one night which would have been okay except for the fact that it was in one of the worst neighborhoods in AC. The parking was ABSOLUTELY ATROCIOUS!!! They jammed the cars 3 in a row and had to keep your keys. When we got to the hotel there was not one spot left for us so we had to pay to park around the corner, again, in the horrible neighborhood. We quickly ran to our room while being followed through the alley to the hotel, and when we got in, I went to wash my face, and there were 4 pubic hairs on the towel!!! Not to mention that one of the other guests was in the lobby at one point complaining because the hotel clerk gave someone else his ID AND CREDIT CARD! I am contacting the Better Business Bureau about this hotel ad well as the main office. NEVER NEVER AGAIN!!!

“Terrible Place”

Howard Johnson Inn Atlantic City

Jul 23, 2007

Terrible hotel, not at all as portrayed. The carpet in the halls was worn, the first room I was given opened on to a covered pass-way rather than the outdoors. The elderly black gentleman at the desk was curteous and moved me to a different room. The pool did exist, but was only open from 10 AM to 8 PM, which is pretty much useless if you are here on business (or a show at the convention center).

I was charged for two nights at check-in. When I asked why I was told that "this is a gambling town." That should have clued me in to the demographics of the place. A better justification for their stance would be that anybody sensible would leave after one night and I am now stuck for two.

I depend on internet access when I travel. WiFi was advertised but only available at a 20% signal in the room. Couldn't connect at all there, so I went to the lobby where new staff was now working. The signal was strong there, but I couldn't get on. I was treated as if it was my fault (despite the fact that I had been travelling with my computer since before either of them was born). Neither knew the URL of the logon page (almost always the problem with open, but conditional acceptance type nets) and had nothing more to offer than "its automatic." Meanwhile they fiddled around on their computer behind the desk.

So finally, I gave up on them, and walked up the block to a nice little pub called the AC Bar & Grill, where I logged on no problem, no hassles, and wrote you this review. There is a perfectly nice (appearing) Best Western right across the street with visible routers in the office area and a clear appearance of recency to the construction and furnishings.

“comfortable and affordable”

The hotel was average.. Nothing really exciting but it was clean and for the most part quiet. I don't know why people gave it such bad reviews. I actually enjoyed my stay and I would return if on a budget. The only problem I did have was the very long 2 blocks to Boardwalk and having to pass the people at the front each time I left or came back because they only have 1 entrance and exit. Overall however it is a good hotel and I would stay there again.

“Not bad if you can't stay at a casino”

Howard Johnson Inn Atlantic City

3 of 5 stars

If at all possible, I recommend staying in a casino when in Atlantic City, however, this hotel will do if that's not an option. I booked midweek for a Saturday in June when all the casinos were sold out or prohibitively expensive.

It's basically a three-floor motel with basic amenities. Nothing fancy at all, but fairly clean (except for a few unidentified stains on the carpet), offers free wireless internet, and surprisingly quiet. The front desk staff was courteous. For some reason, though, the pool was not open even though it was the middle of June and 80+ degrees out.

As for the area, if I were alone I might not walk around late at night (as is the case for all AC outside of the casino/boardwalk area), but it's really not too bad. It's a block down Tennessee Ave. from the boardwalk and a couple of decent bars (I was surprised that the bars on the street were pretty nice), and a decent walk or short cab or jitney ride to/from casinos.

If you stay here, don't expect anything fancy -- it's a Hojo, not the Ritz -- but I was comfortable there and it was even a bit cheaper
than some other hotels in the area that have received negative reviews (Super 8).

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — Decently priced alternative to casino, free wireless internet, proximity to Boardwalk
    • Disliked — Still not a casino, pool closed in summer

“Excellent value, clean rooms, will stay again.”

This place is a great home base while exporing the casinos. It's one block from Bally's, four blocks from the Trump Taj Mahal, and four blocks the other way from the Tropicana. Parking is free, staff is friendly. I will definitely stay here again.

Clean rooms are a great place to crash after a night on the town and you couldn't beat the price at $125 for a Friday night on Labor Day weekend. I booked by phone directly with the hotel on the day we were to arrive--was surprised to even get a room.

My only criticisms are the mattress was too firm and there are some shady characters hanging around the front door. Different characters all night. Made me a little concerned for my car, but I'm sure they have cameras.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — Location, cleanliness, value.
    • Disliked — Rotation of shady characters outside front door.
    • Tips/Secrets: — Book over the phone and flirt a little with the clerk, then ask for the best room available.
