“Fabulous Finch Bay”

Our 25th wedding anniversay trip started with Carolina at Metropolitan Touring. She made all of the arrangements and everything went smoothly. She was attentive and responsive. We did a seven day package which included four day trips on the hotel boat. First rate crew and the luncheons on board were extraordinary. The locations were great as they including hiking, birds, iguanas, sea lions and penguins. The hotel property was pristine. The staff from Monica, to Cesar to Johanna were wonderful. The guides Mario and Soto knew their stuff and particularly kudos to Mario who took my wife under his wings when snorkeling. The food was very good especially given that we were under the meal plan. Pepe's mojitos were first rate. The town of puerto ayora, just a boat taxi ride away, was quaint and the people were happy and friendly . Best of all, we met some nice folks from Tucson and my wife had her picture taken with Dan Rather [very nice man by the way] at the hotel. Oh yes, the weather was spectacular - but bring sun screen and be aware of the equatorial sun. We would gladly return. to the Finch Bay. Perhaps on our 50th anniversary? For all readers of this review who are thinking about visiting the Galapagos, go and enjoy it while you can.

“I'd go back in a heartbeat”

Finch Bay Eco Hotel

5 of 5 stars
Petaluma, CA USA
Jun 9, 2008

This is a wonderful experience in an awesome setting.
We took our family; we're in our sixties, and two children in their late twenties/early thirties with their significant others. We all agree it was the best vacation ever. We did the eight-day/seven night package and felt it was worth every penny.
Because of the desire to preserve the environment the rooms are somewhat Spartan, but very clean, air conditioned, with great showers, hot water, and plenty of towels. All rooms have two single beds, which was not an issue for us.
The hammock on the veranda is a nice touch, too.
You cannot get to the hotel via car. At the municipal pier in Puerto Ayora you hail a water taxi and for $0.60 ($1.00 after dark) they take you to the hotel landing...about 1/4 mile. Then you walk along a lighted (and occasionally paved) path for another 1/4 mile, until you reach the hotel.
This means, of course, that you begin every day with a brisk 1/4 mile walk.
I should mention the breakfasts, though. Wonderful, with something for everyone. Bacon and sausage, fish, chicken, eggs, an omelet cook, rice, potatoes, cheeses, cereals and milk, wonderful coffee and fruit juices.
I can't say enough about the naturalist guides and the "Sea Finch", the hotel yacht. The guides were knowledgeable and very patient. Some of the terrain is pretty rugged, and they made certain we were all comfortable. Each day on the yacht started with a 1-hour boat ride, with coffee served, an excursion (maybe two hours) on a different island walking among amazing creatures who are not at all frightened of humans, a truly wonderful lunch prepared and served aboard, and snorkling and swimming. They had us back at the hotel by 4:00 PM.
We had one day with no activity planned. Half of us got massages at the hotel and loafed by the pool, while the other half signed up at a local dive shop and did a scuba day...truly amazing, lots of sharks and turtles, tuna, barracuda, and thousands of brightly colored reef fish.
Someone else mentioned the walk to Tortuga Bay. Don't miss it; there's a surfing beach with pretty treacherous currents, but just past it there is a wonderful swimming lagoon.
The town of Puerto Ayora is a wonderfully active place, with lots of children and families walking around and, as the day cools down, plenty of soccer and volleyball being played. We didn't see any beggars or homeless people on the streets. Quite inexpensive, with numerous nice restaurants and friendly bars.
I would recommend this highly.

“Loved It”

Finch Bay Eco Hotel

May 21, 2008

We were very skeptical as we had originally booked into the Royal Palm but had problems with our cruise being overbooked so we were put into the Finch Bay instead.

However, we loved the Finch Bay and thought the location was far preferable to our original selection of the Royal Palm.

Starting with our only negative, the rooms were very basic and not what we had hoped for but they were clean, comfortable and after all, we were barely in there. There was also very little to do in the evening but again, we tended to be up and out early so not really an issue but this may have been more of an issue if we had stayed for longer than 3 nights.

Other than that, everything was excellent. The food was very good, the staff were friendly and very helpful and the location was perfect. Defintely try and fit in a walk from the hotel to Tortugua Bay which is spectacular and one of the best beaches we have ever seen.

We also have to recommend a trip on the hotel's yacht which was a much better day out than any of our days on a separate 4 day cruise we had booked. The groups were much smaller and more personal than the big cruises. We also ended up swimming for ages with loads of dolphins which was truly magical until we spotted a Galapagos shark beneath us!

It's a really magical place and most definitely worth visiting.

“It was pretty good”

Finch Bay Eco Hotel

May 19, 2008

Relatively small hotel. I went with fifteen other people and there were only about two other families there. If you have kids it may be better than staying on a boat, but the day trips are lengthy. If you really want to see all the Galapagos has to offer a boat may be better. The food was good and the guide was amazing. The hotel was filled with nice amenities, and the pool is nice. If you go on the website they make it sound like the beach in front is private, but in reality it has natives during the day. if you do stay here, if you have time make sure to go to Las Grietas. It is a tough walk up there, but it is a blast. Especially if you have a sense of adventure and want to climb up the side of a gorge and jump off into crystalline water. Also the wildlife is amazing.

“A Very Special Place”

Finch Bay Eco Hotel

5 of 5 stars
Morden Surrey
Apr 27, 2008

We stayed here for 5 nights in April 2007 following some time in Quito and a cruise round the islands.
We were tired from travelling as we approached the Finch Bay and found the silver sands of the secluded private beach a real tonic as we approached.
I cannot fault the service, food or accomodation on any front. The sight of the local birdlife making itself at home around the expansive pool and in the breakfast room was a joy to behold.
My 2 sons (11 and 6 at the time) were ecstatic about the hammocks and the jacuzzi, as well as the choice and quality of food.
The staff were overwhelmingly helpful, especially when my husband needed medical assistance which they arranged immediately and then sent a courier to pick up a prescription from the pharmacy free of charge.
The most wonderful place. Wish I was back there now.....
