So, where better to write a review of a hotel than from the lobby of the hotel itself? It’s all fresh in the mind and in this case, provides an opportunity to vent a bit.
I travelled here with Thomas Cook. I couldn’t fault the airline service. What was poor were the cramped conditions of the clearly old aeroplane. It was one of Thomas Cook’s 757-200 and its looking worse for its age; rather tatty in some places. Plus the seat pitch is really poor. Come on Thomas Cook, get some newer plans and better legroom on this service.
On arrival at Hurghada Airport the service was quick and efficient if somewhat chaotic. Ignore what they tell you on the plane, the cost to get into Egypt was more than we were told but that’s a really minor gripe. I was the only person from my flight going to the Hilton Longbeach and so rather than a coach transfer the local agents organised a ‘limousine’ or as we know it, a Toyota hatchback driven by Egypt’s very own Lewis Hamilton. It was fine enough transfer if rather fast at times.
The welcome and check in at the hotel was good. Fast, friendly and efficient. And then a golf club car to the room which was fun. The room was clean and well maintained and has remained so throughout my stay so far. The housekeeping service seems to be very discrete, efficient and to a high enough standard. My room was overlooking the beach which was unexpected but lovely. And at last, a room with air conditioning that really works well and maintains a comfortable temperature; not too warm or too cold. Don’t expect a wide selection of choice on the TV; I not bothered but I am missing the BBC World News.
The staff are, on the whole, friendly although I did have an unpleasant encounter with the woman who is looking after the Hilton Honors members, of which I am one, and she was ignorant, surly and frankly rude.
The guests seem to be mainly Russian with a smattering of other eastern Europeans. Perfectly friendly even if they don’t quite understand the rules of the good old British queue! Not many Brits seem to be here so don’t come expecting to meet loads of new friends and understand them.
I had a spa treatment today and it was fantastic. Really worth getting this done at the beginning of your stay and it doesn’t cost a great deal. No pressure selling either although the people selling hotel services are very visible round the pool and on the beach front.
However, the weakest link in this hotel is the food. It’s rubbish! I am no gastronome and I am fairly adventurous when it comes to food. I like to taste the treats from the country I am visiting and I wasn’t expecting a cooked breakfast or burger and chips every day. But the selection of food is crap especially when compared to my recent experiences of similar class hotels in Hurghada. For example, today’s lunch was the choice of grilled liver, deep fried whole fish or spaghetti. Dinner this evening, BBQ chicken, pasta aribatta or pan fried fish. The selection of vegetables is poor as is the fruit. Even the salads here aren’t that great. One final gripe about the food is that the hot food isn’t hot. The only saving grace are the variety of pastries and puddings which range from good to OK but even they are getting a bit repetitious; bread pudding three days out of four so far! Even the food on Egyptian night was rather mid-European! Yes, the food is a real disappointment – or was I expecting too much from a Hilton! The only good thing about the food is that it is plentiful even up until last orders – or is that because noone is eating it! The food did improve a wee bit but still not what I expected from a Hilton!
Would I come back here? To Hurghada and Egypt – yes. This is my fourth trip and its good – warm and not too far. To the Hilton – probably not; at least until they sort the food out. I don’t think my expectations are too high – I know what I got last July from a hotel down the road from in Makadi Bay and a couple of years ago in Sharm el Sheik was far superior. This is afterall a Hilton!
Everything considered – 3/10; excluding the food 6/10.
