I stayed at the Baba Palace for a week in the middle of March 2007. As a woman traveling alone I felt safe at all times and loved being right in the middle of town. I appreciated the elevator, the nice clean room with cable televison, cold a/c (if they shut it down during the day, call the reception and ask for them to turn it on again), hot water at all times, the rooftop restaurant (food is OK) and complementary breakfast (omlettes, coffee/tea, toast, butter, jam)
The hotel is right across the Jagdish temple, very close to the city palace, is surrounded by nice local shops and has a very nice tailor right across the side entrance. Although they advertise as men's wear, the tailor, Darshan Panwar (really nice guy, I saved his card)!) also makes women's clothing and speaks very good English. There are also several nice restaurants within two steps of the hotel (Check out Maxim's Cafe rooftop and Anna's.)
I stayed in a room with a view of the Jagdish temple (950 rupees) but unlike the other reviewer the chanting did not disturb my sleep. The staff was friendly and helpful. At the end of my stay they had tacked on the bill a tax. When I told them the tax is only supposed to be added to rooms that cost more than 1000 rupees, they called the manager and removed it from the bill. I arrived at the hotel at 5.30 a.m. There was a young man in the reception who spoke very little English, but my reservation was in order and I was given a room right away. I would defintely stay at this hotel again. NO PROBLEMS!
