My fiance & I stayed here for 5 nights over new year's eve - 4 nights in a Vice Regal suite (they very kindly offered us an upgrade) & 1 night in a Garden Villa. We were pretty satisfied with our stay, but couldn't recommend it to our friends, because we found the price too high to justify what we would describe as a charming small hotel with very sincere but spotty service - Bali is full of those, at much lower prices.
This was my 14th trip to Bali over the last 11 years, all holidays. I've stayed at hotels ranging from the Aman to the Sheraton, as well as several private villas. The Viceroy is situated on the Lembah Valley, which is very pretty but smaller & less dramatic than the Ayung river valley, where the Aman, Four Seasons (situated in the valley, absolutely stunning), Sayan Terrace etc are located. The rice paddies out front are lovely, & the hotel provides mountain bikes free of charge, which is a nice touch.
Our Vice Regal villa sat on the cliff edge, with a nice garden & lovely view, but felt very old fashioned (not in a classic way), with a bug spray odor & dated furniture. Anyone with a fear of insects (luckily not us) should be aware that our villa was infested with huge ones come dusk, along with a steady supply of lizard droppings; we always expect insects & lizards in Bali, but not to this degree. We almost preferred the much smaller Garden Villa, which was very cleverly & more modernly designed, with a nice little plunge pool & great hangout spaces for those who don't like too much sun.
As for the service, the hotel has less than 10 rooms (it's being expanded), but it still took 1.5 hrs for us to get our correct room service order on the first day. Almost all of the staff we met were genuinely very very nice, but not really competent or efficient, as you would expect in a US$500+/night hotel. We waited 20 minutes at the airport for our pre-arranged car transfer to arrive; the staff apologized heartily for this (& various other foibles during our stay, including forgotten wine orders, delayed car transfers, etc), but these things just wouldn't happen at other good hotels in this price category in Bali.
We could forgive all of the service mishaps if the hotel charged lower room rates, but since their rates are in the same league as the Four Seasons, Ritz, Begawan Giri, Aman, etc, we have to hold them to the same standards. (We stayed at the Begawan last June & the service was fantastic; we stayed at the Amankila last new year's & it was impeccable.) The one major thing that we could not forgive, however, was the disingenious claim to have a top chef in the kitchen; the chef, who had been widely lauded for his food (& a reason we chose to stay at the Viceroy), had left 6 months before our stay. However, the hotel's web site & welcome literature continue to proclaim his presence.... This is ironic - we were disappointed to find the hotel didn't serve more Indonesian food (they couldn't even make us a soto ayam), yet their acclaimed western chef had already left. Overall, we found the food to be pretty good, but not great.
In summary, if you get a good deal on the room rate, are generally forgiving of service, or just have low expectations, you'll probably find the Viceroy charming, as other reviewers have. We couldn't recommend it at the price we paid however; there are just too many good alternatives in Bali. As a side note, we had massages twice at the hotel; the first were not bad, the second were terrible. After that, we went to an outside spa.
