I stay at Marriott's in the Albany area frequently, as my children attend school there. I have stayed at this Marriott before, and it is a lovely property, especially since the recent renovations.
Our problem this time was that we were put on the 8th floor, just across from a ballroom where a very raucous, drunken wedding was held. I have never stayed at a hotel where the meeting rooms were on the residential floors--the Marriott didn't used to be this way. Had there been a separate floor just for the festivities, it wouldn't have been a problem.
We stayed from Friday through Sunday. The problems began Friday night, as the wedding guests, for the most part, were also on our floor. Loud, intoxicated guests roamed the halls at all hours, occasionally with small children in tow, even at 2 AM.
The night of the wedding reception, more loud, drunken profanity, yelling, and door slamming ensued, as the partiers got into fight after fight. There was an elderly couple down the hall from us, who looked frightened as they entered their rooms.
We finally called the front desk around 9 PM, and were told security had already been alerted. Meanwhile, a room service order I had placed came up incorrectly, and the poor server took half an hour to return with my beer, at which point, my dinner was cold, and had to be sent back.
I called the desk several more times, as the noise and ruckus got worse and worse. I told them I would call the police if something wasn't done; they eventually called the police themselves. This went on until about midnight, with more family members screaming profanities and insults at each other in the halls.
I don't know how these people were able to afford the Marriott. I am sure guests were afraid to leave their rooms; I certainly was, after hearing the wedding guests screaming about the [-] who'd called security.
The next morning, on checkout, a couple of the guests were in the elevator with me, and looked me up and down in a hostile manner, which I ignored. I spoke with the manager, Colleen Salanger, who was very apologetic, and comped us the entire weekend.
SO--this is a lovely property, with great rooms, food, and service, and they did make it right for us. My issue is that the police should have been called a lot sooner-this is the sort of situation where guns come out. The safety of the guests should have been paramount.
I still recommend staying here, but ask if you are on a floor where there is a ballroom and if an event will be taking place if you are.
