“worst hotel we steyed in on our holiday”

My husband and i stayed on our last night In sri Lanka at Browns Beach Hotel as it was close to the airport & we getting a very early flight the next day so it made sense. we had been very impressed with most of the hotels that we stayed at in Sri lanksa so this came as a huge disapointment. The Hotel reception was shabby with sagging cheap sofas and staff were not as helpful as they had been previously in other hotels. There was a damp smell and the hotel actually looked dirty. Our room was another story, very bare with just a sheets and a sad old threadbare cover which \had seen better days. The bathroom was a joke, really small with no hot water from the shower even the next morning. The sink was stained with brown streaks and looked old the taps were also loose. everything was so tatty it made us really upset and it put a dampner on our last night in sri lanka. We went out for dinner just to get away from the dreary hotel, but decided to try the hotel bar to see if it was any good. Sad to say we were again disappointed the other people staying at the hotel seemed to be on an all inclusive with Thompsons and were drinking themseves into a stupor. There was a tv room and the football was playing and this was no better people beha\ving loudly and rowdy a bit like a working men's club. That last statement sounds so snobby and i don't mean to be but if you go there you will know what i mean. Also the waiters have no boundries as far as chatting up the female guests even when i was with my husband it was quite annoying.
I had to write this review because i cannot believe the 5.0 and 4.0 people have given it. I would advise you to go if you want a cheap and tatty hotel trying to be 5* There are so many better hotels offering a professional and friendly service

“3 star luxury”

We arrived, me with doubts thanks to trip advisor, fortunately all unfounded, once you accept that it is a 3 star Hotel.
If you want more luxury then you must expect to pay for it.
The food was excellent both in quantity and quality, the staff were tireless in their efforts to please, our room cleaner scrubbed every day and made our bed up in many interesting ways using flowers and folding the towels into various shapes.
Included there are some of the nicest best tended gardens in the area.
Outside Antoniyo & Jude were waiting to take you on trips to wherever your heart desired all at a reasonable cost and in airconditioned vehicles.
So my overall impression is that it is very good 3 star Hotel.
If you are somebody that stays in the hotel confines for a holiday then you might need 4 star.
Only negative comment is that the colour scheme could be a bit brighter.
We can't wait to go back.

“Fabulous experience”

We stayed at Browns Beach Hotel and got married there in February. We had a fantastic time. The rooms in the main building could do with a lick of paint, however this is a 3 star hotel - not 5! The hotel was extremely clean, and all rooms have air-con, a fridge, clean sheets every day, towels around the pool and a beach view! What more can you want? We stayed in one of the beach rooms, which are excellent quality and value for money and well worth the upgrade. The staff are fantastic. Always helpful and friendly, they cannot do enough for you and are genuinely happy to help. The food was excellent. Admittedly on the 2nd week it became a little repetative, but that is only because we had a tendancy to try several things each day! The deserts are fantastic. The setting is fabulous with a gorgeous beach. It is close enough to walk to local restaurants - yes some of the pavements have holes in but its not a problem if you look where you walk. Alternatively a tuk-tuk is cheap enough!

We cannot wait to return to this hotel. We spent a further week in the Maldives - which although lovely neither the food or the staff were a patch on this hotel (and believe me it cost more than double!). We highly recommend the fine dining experience - very reasonable and the food was fantastic. Thank you Browns Beach for making our wedding so memorable and our honeymoon so fantastic.

“Two excellent weeks”

Browns Beach Hotel

After reading some of the reviews on this site, our expectations were a little low.
However, from arrival to departure, our experience was almost entirely positive.
We upgraded to a beach room ($30 per night) - money well spent. Clean comfortable room kept in good nick by an army of cheerful staff. Clean sheets every day! True, the towels have seen better days, but clean and fresh smelling.
Food excellent, especially for curry enthusiasts. A la Carte steaks and prawns very good, but don't bother with the wine list.
All the staff really lovely, and genuinely cheerful, without going over the top.

Trips - Catamaran trip on lagoon with Mohammed (green t-shirt, beard, hangs around beach room end of hotel - don't worry, he will find you!) is a must if you want a genuine experience with a bunch of nice guys.
Elephant orphanage, Kandy, Temple of the tooth, Nuwara Eliya and tea gardens all done with an absolutely excellent guide with his own car (contact us for his details)
Train to Colombo - exciting experience, well worth the effort.

Weather - warm and sunny, three days rain out of two weeks, but not a problem.

Reading previous comments about pavements etc - just watch where you're walking or get a tuk tuk (dirt cheap)!

Great holiday. We have never been to the same place twice, but are planning to return next year - still lots to do and see.
