Ancient Ephesus is almost overwhelming to visit. The size of the city and its amenities were so much more developed than our modern stereotype of an ancient city. Ephesus was a huge, well developed center of trade and culture. Marc Anthony, Cleopatra, Sulla, and many other notables of the Roman era visited here. It is still being excavated, so who knows how much more they will discover?
The enormous theater is a must-see. The library of Celsus, baths, public toilets cleansed by running water, and of course the brothel were particularly interesting, and there are quite a few other monuments and features of interest. A knowledgeable guide who can explain the history behind the sights is a big asset, since the signs just give names. For example, our guide explained how you can tell the size of ancient Greek cities from the number of seats in the theaters (10% of the population). He showed us how the fountains could be diverted to cool and clean the marble main street, especially on hot days.
Speaking of which, we visited in May, and Ephesus was already quite warm and sunny. Sunblock and hats were a must. You should also be able to walk for 2-3 hours.
If you get a chance to tour the Terrace Houses (a separate admission site within the ancient city), do so. They are worth a visit, as they are well preserved and give a good idea how the wealthier citizens lived.
What an amazing place this is!
