My wife and I spent the 2nd half of our honeymoon at the Four Seasons Langkawi. We loved it as it was quiet and different from all other places we've stayed.
Pros:
1) Quiet resort (I think this is due to the traditions/practices of the people who tend to stay here. With many being muslim, most of the women, who are often fully covered, stay indoors to avoid the sun.).
2) Great Spa (Couples room is huge), bungalows nice to lounge on, prices are moderate-to-high
3) Amazing Moroccan/Middle Eastern architecture fused with Souteast Asian design
4) Good Breakfast buffet, great service. Room service was very good, although a little slow. Funky Rhu Bar overlooking the ocean (must hang out on the swing chair). Love how most servers know your name.
5) Lower Pavililions have really nice private outdoor spa shower/bath gardens
6) Gym was very nice, great that they offer bikes for free for the length of your stay
7) Beach activities are plentiful and equipment is well kept
8) Far enough from the downtown hub-bub, but close enough to take taxi's to/from
9) Beautiful pools and grounds. Luv the private booths in the adult pool
10) Typical Four Seasons service
Cons:
1) Limited on dinner choices at/near the resort
2) Mosquitos (they offer free bugspray and coils)
3) without the bike, the rooms, gym can be a far walk to the lobby
4) Very slow internet at the library (rooms did not have connectivity)
5) No golf course close by
We stayed at the 4 Seasons Bali Jimbaran during the 1st half of our honeymoon. I would rate that resort to be a 10, while this to be about a 8.5 or 9. Downtown was about a 20min taxi ride (no matter which way you took) as the island is pretty small. The entrance is very unique with a beautiful middle eastern chandelier and the japanese sand/rock gardens that eventually lead you to the tranquil waiting area (a peaceful pool with a gazebo in front of you where they hold private dinners). As usual, you are greeted with a refreshing drink and a towel when you check-in. The main concierge desk area, although unique and very middle eastern, was quite dark. Once ready to go to your room, you will be driven via buggy as the room may be quite a far walk depending on where you are staying.
The room (lower Melucca pavillion): Moderate in size, with nice decorative art pieces, great lighting, and awesome bathroom with dual sinks. Outdoor bath/shower garden was a great touch with Cala Lillies and other tropical fauna as we spent most of our bathing time there (use a mosquito coil if bathing at nite). The bed was comfy, the A/C and venting good, and the huge glass doors a nice touch when you want to see the sun.
The grounds: Get some bikes, as the grounds are well spread apart! Nice flowers and well kept grounds. Pool areas were nice and clean. Esp loved the adult lap pool with the private booths. Pool service was above avg as we were constantly offered towels, free water, given free tropical drinks/snacks, and spritzed every so often. main pool is also nice with good size, fun fountain sprays, massaging waterfalls, and some private areas. Bugs at nite. Monkeys by the gym. Some rodent like creatures in the various brush (not rats, nor mice...kind of like little kangaroos). Navigation can be quite confusing as everything looks alike. The infamous "cement plant" is barely noticeable as there is so much more to look at. Grounds are very, very, very quiet. The entrance and adjoining paths are very nicely lit at nite. Additionally, the Library is nice, has a decent collection of movies/books, and has nice Khoi pond area to sit back and read.
Beach: Is above average. Very empty. Decent Service. nice sailboat, catamaran, and other beach toys avail.
Gym: Freddie Rocks! He's very knowledgable of the area and is a yoga master. May the force be with you. Sand is OK, water was OK, some seaweed/rocks depending on where u go. We chose to stay at the pool mostly.
Spa: The entrance is nice, and really love the waiting room bungalows over the water. Spa menu is good, but as expected, four seasons prices. The couples building is quite spectacular. The shower room had so many jets hitting you from every direction and had its own steam room. The massage area was very nice, clean, secluded, and the service was good. Well worth the cost.
The service/food: Top notch 4Szns standard. Buffet area is nice, good breakfast, strong coffee. Beach restaurant great for lunch, nice view, good drinks, can be a little breezy. Rhu bar is cool, swing away while sipping on some exotic drink staring out to see. Take some bread with you, put in a water bottle, for feeding fish (if you are going snorkeling/diving). I would suggest eating out if you want truly authentic food at 1/3 the cost. There are tons of Thai and Chinese seafood places (ask the Concierge or Freddy) in town. Also, if you are daring enough, grab a bite at the nightly flea market downtown. Lots of good tasty eats for dirt cheap.
Other notes: Ask the concierge to call you taxi and head into town. Go get some duty free liquor, some cuban cigars, some tasty snacks at the supermarket/flea market. Eat at the many Thai and Chinese restaurants. Don't waste your time with Eagle Sq or the Mashuri tomb. Most of these places have "made up" histories just to cater to tourists. Golf at Datai is nice if you have time, as it is about 30min away. Pulau Payar (or the other nearby dive sties) is very nice as there are tons of fish and some shark feeding to see.
