We spent 10 days at Bon Ton as the final part of our three week holiday in December/January. It is important to make it clear that the place is a small resort of 8 separate, quite distinct and simply unique properties with a restaurant and bar complex. It is NOT a hotel of the Datai/Andaman variety and yet the quality of the Bon Ton experience is quite simply superb. If you want 5* hotel luxury then Bon Ton is not for you. You won’t get marble floors, double glazing, mini-bars, trouser presses, three restaurants, two pools, buggy transport. You do get a unique experience, unbelievable relaxation, superb service – not of the fake corporate variety, but genuine interest and care – excellent food, a wonderful house to live in. This place is basically not corporate at all. Don’t go there if you want corporate.
To detail. We spent four nights in Blue Ginger and five in Yellow Orchid. I think we preferred the first, although both are wonderful. The beds are very comfortable and the furnishings show real care and attention in terms of their sympathy with the surroundings. Lots of cushions and fabrics abound that are mainly decorative but reflect the style of the resort and the houses perfectly. Mossie nets worked perfectly well – we never really had any problems with insects, but it was the start of the dry season – the spraying system is absolutely fine. You must expect this especially as the windows don’t quite shut properly, the doors have gaps above and below and the floorboards are open to the elements. But you’re staying in an old, original house so what do you expect? As I said, if you want corporate with double glazing then forget it. We slept really well most nights and woke refreshed almost every morning. The nights we didn’t sleep well were self induced – but the bar is so relaxing and the staff and other guests are so friendly that it seemed rude to refuse that extra beer or whisky or glass of wine.
Others have commented on the breakfast. We really enjoyed it and in fact left part of it each day because we were so full. You get five different items left in the fridge each evening so that you can enjoy it at whatever time and in whatever place you like. We enjoyed most eating on the verandah of Yellow and watching the place wake up. Of course things will be cold, they’ve been in the fridge! But you can toast the bread if you can be bothered. The other food was quite simply the best we had in Malaysia. Yes, I’d agree with others that it is expensive by Malaysian standards – but still no more pricey than the Andaman. The standard is just as good. What other resort can you stay at where you can help the chef make a beef rending for the staff to eat? And then eat it yourself for lunch. This kind of relaxed attitude really sums the place up.
The houses have outdoor bathrooms in many instances. It is a strange but wonderful feeling to be showering with the open sky above you whilst the water flows through the gaps in the floorboards under your feet. We didn’t try the bath – simply because we prefer showers – but it was also very much open to the elements. The bathrooms are fully equipped with everything you could need, with fashionable local products, good towels and very clean.
The pool is small, about 25 metres long but only about 3 wide. It has a shallow end with bubbles and at its deepest is only chest deep. It is perfectly possible to swim in it but it is at its best for wallowing. The area round the pool is great for relaxation. There are more sunbeds than guests and at its busiest of the 10 days we were there I counted 14 people! The staff bring iced water out to you regularly, they also bring out little snacks of fruit and other tit-bits during the afternoon. Of course you can order other food or drinks as you wish. I’m never a great one for lounging around on a sunbed, I always get itchy and feel the need to do something productive, but I was amazed at how easily I allowed myself to be drawn into the Bon Ton atmosphere of doing very little. I have never felt so relaxed on holiday and left feeling really refreshed.
The restaurant and bar are great. The food is modern Malay and international. It is very well prepared and excellent in quality. The menu isn’t that extensive and if you are there for a while, as we were, then it is possible to go through every dish more than once. Clearly one can have favourites and I certainly enjoyed the nonya platter more than once – it was excellent! The bar is great, well stocked and reasonably priced. It was really good to be able to have dinner and then retire to the bar or the sofas at the end of the restaurant and just while away the remainder of the evening chatting with other guests and the staff. We were there for two evenings when the regular menu was off – Christmas day and New Year’s eve. They put a special menu on for each night and priced it accordingly. It wasn’t cheap and the whole thing, drinks and all came in at around £100 for two. This sounds expensive and for Malaysia it is, but we would expect to spend that sort of sum on a special meal out in the UK and Christmas and New Year are special aren’t they? That said, New Year’s eve was a super evening and we stayed chatting, dancing and having a great time until about 3.30am with the champagne flowing courtesy of the owners.
Some have commented on the animals. There are plenty of cats around and a few dogs. Cats roam freely but the dogs are walked on leads. We didn’t have a single problem with them in the 10 days. The grounds are very well looked after and any mess is quickly and quietly dealt with. The problem I had was taking too much sympathy on the cat with three legs and the one that looked just like the cat I had as a child. If you get to meet Pepper he is big, black, cuddly, a bit stupid, but with a viscous streak.
It is certainly worth getting out and about in Langkawi. The resort will arrange anything you want from car hire to mangrove kayaking as well as giving you a lift into town if you want to go to the beach. We did all of these and saw something of the island. It really is fantastic and we loved it. Bon Ton also arranged a table at the Andaman for us one evening, pulling strings to get us in when we wanted to go – that’s the sort of service you get. It is well worth going to the local restaurants as well, to get more of a flavour of the area. You can eat good food for much less than Bon Ton at places on the main drag.
In all we absolutely loved the place. We debated whether we would prefer to stay at places like the Datai or Andaman but, whilst they have all mod cons, they lack the intimacy and feeling of uniqueness that Bon Ton has. It is a very special place and you are extremely well looked after. There’s no beach, just a wetland area where the beach once was. But that doesn’t matter. As we discussed with other guests there it is actually better that it doesn’t have a beach. It keeps it quiet, unspoilt, slightly out of the way and intimate in a way that being on the beach wouldn’t. You feel very much part of the family.
We are now left with a problem. This place is so good that anywhere we go to now will come a very poor second. We’ll have to go back.
