“Great new rooms”

Sugar Beach Resort

Apr 7, 2008

While we stayed at La Pirogue - our two children-aged 18 and 21 stayed at the property next door- Sugar Beach. It was wonderful to be able to try out both hotels as they belong to one company. The young ones definately preferred Sugar Beach- especially as the rooms had been renovated and were modern and light. We were very impressed with the room decor but at the time that we were there, the public areas had not been changed and were definately in need of some improvements. The food (half board basis) was great as was all the entertainment and of course there was the opportunity to swap with all the facilities of La pirogue next door if one wanted too. The staff was much friendlier and overall made us all feel very welcome. Our only two gripes were that the pool area at Sugar beach was quite hot and there was little shade. and secondly, the two hotels use a ridiculously complicated voucher system- which seemed to not work at all. The prices of incidental items were very high (see our report on La pirogue) and we would definately advise guests to buy their water, suntan lotion etc from the local shops rather than at the hotel.

“Happy 25th Wedding Anniversary”

Sugar Beach Resort

My wife and I went to the Sugar Beach for our 25th Wedding Anniversary with our children.

The flight with British Airways was fantastic. The hotel room, guest service and activities you could not ask for better. The hotel laid on a anniversary dinner on the beach with personal waiter and the room was decorated upon our return with rose patels and champaign and swans made out f towels.

The children also had an amazing time.

We had a fantastic anniversary holiday and will be going back. We can not rate this hotel high enough.

The staff was amazing helpful, kind and fun!

“Great hotel”

Sugar Beach Resort

5 of 5 stars

Stayed Oct/Nov 07, 2nd visit to this hotel and not disappointed, as this was the first time we have ever returned to the same hotel, had a great time.

Flight with Air Mauritius – ok flight out, although with the new/revised seating layout the seating had less leg room than last time even though bizarrely we had exactly the same seat as our last trip. But flight was on time and crew helpful, transfer to hotel straight forward about 50 mins. The flight back was not so good, crew tried hard but a lot of people had problems with the entertainment system, to the point where it didn’t work for quite a few, seats also broken and limited meal choice as they ran out.

Hotel - from the moment we arrived the service was excellent, check in took 5 mins, complimentary breakfast and then straight to our room.

Room – good views, comfortable, mini bar restocked every day. Maid was brilliant, spotlessly clean room, very polite and cheerful, always waved and said hello by name, as did a lot of the other staff after a couple of days.

Food – Main restaurant was good, some nights excellent, occasionally busy when other restaurants closed.

Lunch time in the pool bar was also generally good, could be slow at times other days quite quick, didn’t seem to be any reason for this though, volume of guests didn’t appear to be the problem, but at least staff prepared to adjust the food menu to suit.
Lunch at Citronella’s excellent, staff went out of their way to get wine or food we wanted, we mentioned one of the delicious evening deserts in conversation with our waiter, couple of minutes later he returned to say the chef would prepare some for us, we hadn’t asked for it.
Beach service for food and drink very good.

Visited the other restaurants several times - Citronella’s and Paul + Virginie and enjoyed excellent food and good service, enough variety, plenty of local dishes and seafood.

Evening entertainment ok with the weekly Jazz band superb in the pool bar.

Beach great, water warm, sandy & gently sloping, most days windy with some very windy periods, a couple of days too much for the beach, but this made the windsurfing superb. Equipment has been expanded since last year and therefore had better gear for the windy days with smaller boards, still not enough rigs though.

Weather - One day of complete gales and heavy rain plus a couple of days with a few showers. Not as warm as same time last year, with the wind from the south west and not the more normal south east trades. As usual for the tropics most days the winds died down for the evenings and picked up again mid morning.

Overall would recommend this hotel to couples and families for a relaxing relatively quiet holiday with watersports/activities on hand if wanted. We felt very relaxed after 2 days and after 2 weeks fully recharged, we are likely to return November 08

The hotel is going through some major changes, currently the rooms are being refurbished and revamped to a more upmarket feel with the latest equipment, this is due for completion March 08, although there was no noise, dust or interference from the work when we visited, all areas being carefully screened off.

The Hotel is due to close in 1st April and reopen 1st August, with a complete revamp of the common areas – new heated swimming pool in the south village and terraces, enlarged main pool, pool bar moved to beachside location, enlarged and with bistro style restaurant attached serving seafood, in the evening the bar will host bands, groups, piano, jazz etc, there will be a new main bar in the main building plus a new shopping mall, the main restaurant and reception will be refurbished. New watersports facility near the north village with split in activities – windsurfing/sailing here and motorised at la pirogue. There will also be a new much larger spa and gym complex with enough new equipment to cover both hotels.

The prices are also going up !!!,

We were invited to see some of the new rooms and they appear to be completely refurbished with new décor, furniture, bathrooms, Lcd tv’s etc

“Fantastic holiday, great hotel”

Sugar Beach Resort

We were celebrating our 10th Wedding anniversary and as we got married in Mauritius we wanted to return. We felt special on arrival and were welcomed by the Manager (he welcomed each guest personally). We chose this hotel because of the childrens facilites as we wanted our 5 year old son to have fun - unfortunately there were very few children there so we couldn't make much use of the kids club although the staff were great! We loved the hotel and the entertainment provided by the in house team was first class - like watching a west end show every other evening. The buffet was excellent each evening and the Indian Chef from Leicester even made us a special chicken tikka masallah one night and it was the best we have ever tasted. We ate at the Pirogue every lunch time as the setting was so pretty overlooking the pool and the fresh prawns in pineapple and veggie samosas were not to be missed - the restaurant manager Kamla was wonderful to us and our son still talks about Kamla's restaurant. I did the tour of the back of the hotel which took us to all areas including the kitchens and laundry which was really interesting. Most nights our towels were folded into shapes such as swans or elephants - they really make a lot of effort. The only down side was waiting for glasses of wine with dinner as the service was very slow - but we were on holiday to relax so tried not to let it bother us. We would definitely go back - maybe for this New Year, but the prices are so expensive at that time of year it's unlikely. Word of warning - we married at the Merville Beach hotel in Grand Baie so went back to visit it and show our son where we got married - the beach is still amazing but the hotel has deteriorated badly so if you are deciding between the 2 hotels, there is no comparison and I would definitely choose the Sugar Beach

“Sugar and Spice and all things nice..”

Sugar Beach Resort

We have just returned from a 10 day holiday at the Sugar Bay Beach Resort in Flic en Flac. The hotel was great. We had a beach villa overlooking the sea but a standard hotel room would have been as good.

The service was excellent. We had a personal check-in and were greeted with a cocktail and handed lemon scented flannels to wipe our
weary brows after an 11 hour flight! They bang a gong to announce your arrival ... a little over the top and somewhat embarrassing but no one was really looking.

We were on a half board basis and the food was good and plentiful offering a buffet breakfast with just about everything you could think of for having for breakfast....and more. Word of warning if you
don't like birds....they like to join you for breakfast given half the chance so never leave your croissant unattended. There was a themed buffet each evening and although you could eat in the a la carte restaurant (for an added price of course) you really don't need
to as there is so much choice and variety. The hotel have their own entertainment band and dancers who were very professional and versatile - they really made an effort every night.

The drinks are not cheap but equally they're not overpriced. Expect to pay approximately 7 Euros per cocktail which is fair enough...and they are delicious.

The staff were very courteous and attentive at all times. There isn't
much to see at Flic en Flac but there are a few shops and a couple of
supermarkets if you feel the need to buy lunch! We would definately recommend this hotel to friends.
