Stayed between Xmas and New Year.
Chose the hotel after reading reviews of its Art Nouveau interiors, brand new Dec 2005 refurb and great location.
After getting over how expensive hotel rooms are in Moscow, we were thoroughly happy with the Savoy.
Relatively small hotel with 67 rooms ensured attentive service, Never had to wait for anything. The reception was very efficient in booking the restaurants we wanted.
Breakfast in the beautiful dining room offers an elaborate choice, and is a very civilised start to the day - compared to what I've read about crowded breakfast rooms in the larger hotels.
2 very convenient metro stations, each 1 minute away: Kuzetsky Moct and Lubyanka.
Easy 10 minutes walk to the Kremlin, Bolshoi, and smart shops.
Be sure to visit the 24hr large food shop Syedmoy Continent, 2 minutes walk away. The helpful doormen at the hotel will point you in the direction.
City traffic is very unpredictable. Took 2.5 hours to get from Domedodovo airport to hotel, but 50mins to return.
The taxi to/from airport booked via the hotel for about £30 each way, seemed good value compared to other fares and hassle we've heard about
The currency exchange in the Savoy offers average competitive rate, but you can do better in the small bureaux round the corner, turn left as you exit hotel. These appeared the best in the whole city.
It may have been fun to try a night at one of the older soviet style hotels such as Ukraina or Sovietsky, both of which we saw too. But would definitely return to the Savoy.
