We stayed at the Ambassador during the Insight Tours "Easy Pace Russia" package. The hotels in Russia collect your passport upon arrival. We were both surprised and pleased that the Hotel Ambassador noticed that my wife's birthday fell during our stay. We returned from a tour of the Hermitage to find chilled Russian Champagne and chocolates waiting in our room. We took the bottle to a local restaurant, "1913", and shared our good fortune with the other diners.
The Hotel Ambassador exceeded our expectations on every count. A good location, friendly and helpful staff and an excellent buffet breakfast. A first class hotel.

Like the others writing here, I have to give this Above Average ratings. It missed getting anything better because the AC worked poorly. Like elsewhere in Russia, the AC units are not adequate for the rooms, or the hotels shut the AC power down at night, or maintenance is poor. It was hot at night. Otherwise, I liked the in-room safes that were large enough to hold my fanny pack, passport case, camera, etc. I felt safe in the neighborhood and liked the fact that it was near two good groceries (cheap but top quality vodka and yummy ice cream). Several restaurants nearby. Our tour included the breakfast buffet - excellent quality but poorly arranged with the omelet station set in the middle of the table layout, thus holding up the lines. Rooms were very clean and towels were soft and large. Be careful as the tubs are high and anyone older might have trouble stepping in and out. I recommend the hotel highly. It was near the Nevsky Prospect and the Church of Spilt Blood, along with the synogogue and other sights.

We recently stayed three nights at the Ambassador Hotel as part of a river cruise tour. We found it to be an excellent hotel, on par with the nicest hotels we have stayed at worldwide. Our room was attractive and comfortable, and its interior location was especially quiet. Hotel management was very courteous in responding to our requests. The central lobby was nicely appointed -- definitely the feel of a high quality hotel. We also appreciated having both internet access and an ATM adjacent to the lobby.
There are several good, inexpensive restaurants close to the hotel; and our inability to speak Russian was not a hinderance at all. The hotel restaurant was also very good; however, our buffet breakfasts and one dinner there were included in the cost of our tour, so I really can't address the value received.
The hotel is located within easy walking distance of Sennaya Ploshchad square with a large shopping mall and two metro stations. So shopping is convenient, and we also had easy access to St. Petersburg via the metro.

This a an elegant and well maintained hotel. The rooms are large and the amenities are modern.

We had a standard and suite. The suite had wireless internet but not the standard room....go figure. You needed to purchase a card at Rub.
90.00 for 1 hour.

The location is away from the hustle and bustle of Nevsky Prospekt. Best is a local restaurant 10min by foot called 1913. Don't miss it!
