Kyoto is a BEAUTIFUL place! And this hotel is so japanesy and cute! Even the vending machine on the 2nd floor selling drinks and beer! So nice! I arrived late at night and the staff were very prompt to check me in. No deposit required and I was eager to get in my room. The room is small, almost cramped, but I guess by Japanese standards, it's ok. The bathroom reminded me of the lavatories on an aircraft. I had a big bed on the top floor which overlooked Oike Dori. The staff were always attentive and willing to help in that reserved, polite Japanese way. The TV showed only Japanese programmes, not even CNN or BBC, and the breakfast is only available from 7am to 9.30. A bit short if you asked me. I would have thought that the Japanese would like to have an early breakfast and holidayers would probably sleep in a bit. I didn't try the breakfast as I came back late each night and slept in until past 10.
To get here, you will need to buy a 2980 Yen ticket on a train called the HARUKA. It's not available from the automated machines at Osaka Kansai airport and you have to walk into the office on the right side of those machines. I almost missed it, so keep your eyes open. Once at Kyoto Terminal, take the subway (2 floors in the basement) to Karasuma Oike and get out at exit 3-2. It's about 100 metres straight down. The hotel is pretty centralised although you will have to take the subway to some of the main attractions like Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion) and Nijo Castle, but you can take a slow stroll into Gion and Pontocho! This I often did on those cool Spring evenings, very relaxing!
Like I said at the beginning, Kyoto is a great city, highly recommended for romantic getaways and honeymooners. And Gimmond is a SUPERB hotel to stay at for the young at heart. I can't think of anywhere better than this!
