This is the Marriott at 1999 Jefferson Davis Highway.
I often stay at the large chain hotels when in the US. This time another Marriott. My experience with Marriott is usually not a bargain, but worth it. Also, great and friendly service.
The Crystal City Marriott was my first exception. The hotel is old and tired. The rooms have been refreshed, but there was a lot of wasted space. Great bed – large and comfortable – if only I could have had a good nights sleep. So much noise that could have been avoided! There were three main problems with the noise. As with most hotels, there is a gap between the bottom of the door and the floor. I don't know why hotels haven't caught on to this and fill that space. My room had a gap of about a half inch that allowed all the hallway noise inside the room. I wasn't too near the elevator, but anyone talking in the hallway was easily heard in my room. Second, the unity room (next door) had a very loud ice machine. Not only was the ice maker loud (probably as equally tired as the room), but it regularly "turned" the ice making a very loud clinking – not to mention when people accessed the machine. I heard that constantly from under the door. Putting a door on the utility room would have helped that. Third, the wall heater was as tired as the room and when engaging announced itself with a very loud noise before settling in for the heat. Also made sharp bang when it finished. It turned on about every half hour.
I thought about asking for another room, but most of the doors had a gap underneath and as tired as the hotel looked, the heating units were probably the same.
The staff were ok, but had problems finding my reservation. They weren't very welcoming or friendly as I have experienced at other Marriott's. Not unfriendly, but at a Marriott, I expected to be taken better care of. They were, however efficient and business-like. On a minor note, on the website I had asked for the Washington Post as my free paper delivered to my room, but always received a USA Today. I would mention that every morning at the desk and they would correct it with a free Washington Post. But always the next day the wrong paper.
In summary, a great location for being in Washington. On the Metro (with underground access, restaurants nearby, low end of the price scale for a Washington DC Marriott. But don't expect to get very much sleep. The Marriott Crystal Gateway is a block away, newer and more expensive. If your per diem can handle it, stay there instead.
