“Very Average”

Mercure Grand Internacional Foz

Mar 10, 2008

If you like hotels stuck in a 70's timewarp then you will love this hotel. Personally I can't see how it is rated as high as it is or how people rave about it. I was very dissapointed.

The decor is very brown and looks like it has not been decorated for years. The bed was comfortable and everything worked but it just felt all rather jaded.

The main restaurant was closed when I was there so you had to eat in the bar. Saying that the food was good. Room service was also very prompt. Breakfast was a large buffett with a good choice.

There seemed to be very little to do in the town and there seemed to be a few too many shady characters for my liking. Also, because you are in the centre of town you have to bear the brunt of Taxi costs to and from the airport and to and from the falls especially if you do both sides.

They have internet access in the business centre but I thought it was expensive at $10 an hour.

Overall, I don't think you have all that much choice of a good hotel here but I think on reflection I would have preferred to stay in the park and save on all the taxi journeys.

“Perfectly Fine”

I´m not sure if the previous two reviewers stayed in the same hotel as we did. Either way, we had booked the hotel a long way back and read their reviews a couple of days before we were due to get there. We checked in with a great deal of apprehension and...couldn´t really find anything particularly wrong with it.

The room was big and the decor was certainly not dated (We were on the 9th floor). Service was fine and not particularly slow. Breakfast was fine too - the usual Brazil fare.

The bakery next door is pretty good.

The hotel certainly isn´t a 5 star as I think it claims to be. More like a 3.5 star and perhaps that´s where the differences in opinions lie. In any case, the price we paid was fair.

As a town, yes it is a dump but you aren´t exactly going there to see the town itself and neither are you likely to be there for more than a couple of nights.

“Awful place”

Stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in the beginning of January 08 which was 3 nights too many. I cannot see how this could be a 5 star hotel. The rooms are dark with old furniture that looks like they're from the 70s, the corridors are dark and smell of cat piss.
The town is horrible and there's nothing to do apart from watch tv in the room.

“Terrible place to stay”

Mercure Grand Internacional Foz

This was similar to a motel 6 in america. It was so terrible that i could not wait until i left.

Postive things about the hotel

1-The room is huge, with a little table in it as well.

2-The tv had some america movies on at night

3-It is 120 dollars a night

4-I checked out at 2 even though it was suppose to be 12, but i did not want to stay any longer than i did but i had a late flight

Negative things

1-The room had bugs in it, which made it hard to sleep because i was itchy the whole time

2-The hotel had no lights in the room that worked

3-The hallway lights were sensored and only went on when you past the section you just walked through

4-The maids were very rude and gave me an attitude because i needed a towel to take a shower

5-No tissues or wash clothes though i do not think hotels in brazil offer this luxury

6-The town was disgusting, not a thing to do but drink in your room, was a beat down town

7-Mostly brazilian stayed at the hotel which is not a bad thing but if you are looking for any americans to be there, then pick a hotel closer to the national park

8-did not offer money exchange like every other hotel in brazil

FOR YOUR OWN GOOD DO NOT STAY HERE, I MADE THIS MISTAKE AND I TELL YOU THAT IT WIL HURT ONCE YOU ARRIVE.

“Good hotel, average service”

We stayed at the Mercure for three nights while we visited the falls around Christmas, and had a nice stay. The hotel is clean with nice furnishings for South America, and the lobby and restaurants are very nice as are the pool. The location is downtown but only close to a couple of restaurants including a churrascaria that is recommended. In any event, the falls are about 15-20 km from the town so if you are visiting you should be renting a car and there are many restaurants within a 1-2 minutes drive.

My only complaints about the hotel are with service, which was average at best: check-in took a very long time, we had difficulty getting towels for the pool, and we had to call more than once to have a broken light bulb changed. That said, we were there at Christmas so I have to give them a lttle benfit of the doubt that they were probably short-staffed.
