We visited Ko Lanta, Thailand in late December 2007 into January 2008 and took two trips with Susanna Bachman and Captain Sayan (Sun). Our first trip to Ko Ngai was spirited and exciting, as we were sharing the journey with a family from Sweden -- mom, dad and three small children. Sayan and Susanna were so prepared for us, with cold water and beer, as well as fresh and sweet watermelon and bananas to keep us hydrated. What a surprise when we anchored right on the beach at Ko Ngai! We were treated to an amazing, delicious lunch prepared by Sayan, who is a trained professional chef. Spicy, fried Baracuda, green curry and rice, all washed down with cold water or beer and lounging in the sun/shade of the white sand beaches. We snorkeled most of the afternoon after that, walked up and down the beach, collecting shells and taking pictures. Our second trip after the new year was even more exciting, as we made several snorkeling stops along the way, including a trip to the Emerald Caves and the beach that inspired the movie "The Beach". This time, the watermelon and bananas not only sustained us, but brought the most beautiful, colorful fish to investigate while we snorkeled. Another fabulous lunch on the beach and a lovely dinner that evening right on the beach with Captain Sayan, Susanna, Bao and two other German tourists on the trip as well. The team of Susanna and Sayan and their "wing man", Bao make for a wonderful experience. Susanna has many tidbits to tell; what it's like for a 6' tall, blonde American to be among the people of Thailand, all the great places to eat and see and visit. It's an experience you cannot get from reading a tour book. And the pleasure of seeing Sayan and Bao's smiles is worth it alone. Both are somewhat shy, but when they smile, it not only lights up their faces, but the day as well.
