“Total Perfection”

Phi Phi Relax Beach Resort

Apr 15, 2008

I was a lone woman traveler from the US and was worried about having nothing to do. That makes me smile now because I was in Thailand for three weeks and Phi Phi Relax Resort was my favorite part!!! ( I was there for 6 days) The water is just like you dream it will be, blue, inviting, fantastic!!! And the people that work there are awesome and made me feel so welcome and certainly not alone. The food is delicious and the outdoor Thai massage is relaxing, just listen to the waves roll in and feel the warm oil sink into your skin. I got a tattoo there, right there on the beach... the tattoo artist is very talented and clean and uses a bamboo tool... fabulous! I can't wait to go back! I highly recommend these rustic huts if you want to get back to the basics and if you are looking for some long lost tranquility....

“Nice place away from the awful Tonsai Bay”

We stayed a Relax for 3 days. Very nice place away from the Ton sai Bay. I you are going to phi phi and want to stay a quite place with a private beach, this is the place. Very nice restaurant with really great Thai food and super nice Thai people running it.

We where a bit disappointed about the huts, not much room and very basic.

The beach here is great but hard to go for a swim during the low tide. The reef just of the beach was very nice to, just keep and open eye for inbound long tail boats when you are snorkeling!

Its a bit overpriced, but everything on phi phi is!

Would recommend this to anyone.

“Pricey and remote”

We had prebooked and paid on-line for 3 nights - the resort was the most basic of 12 resorts we stayed in during our month in Thailand and the 2nd most expensive. We had a beachfront hut B4 which was bright and sunny. The bathroom was appalling - the cockroche was there to greet us - the non-flushing toilet, concrete floor, tin roof, made for a dark, dank en suite! The bedroom had a mosquito net that was not big enough so we spent a lot of time trying to tuck it into the mattress. There was not one hook, hanger, rail on which to put anything. The hut was not cleaned once during our stay and no replacement drinking water was provided. The website shows a lovely room, decorated with flowers - the only flowers we saw were growing in the grounds. Andrew the Burmese Manager is the life-blood of this place, without him there would be no fun as the rest of the staff speak very little English. The food was good but expensive and the barman was on holiday for our first 2 nights so the drink service was very slow. If you want a pure escape from commercialism this is the place for you (my husband was quite happy but did admit it was not good value) I was shell-shocked and would have left on the next boat if we had not prepaid - I survived but only just. I saw a lot of other unhappy-looking women on the beach - the resort is just very, very basic. The far end of the beach needs cleaning up - it is a disgrace.

“Unforgettable”

Phi Phi Relax Beach Resort

My husband and I spent 8 unbelievable nights here on the tail end of our honeymoon. We arrived in at dusk when the sun had already gone behind the hill and the first thing I felt was the I had arrived at some secret beach community - which was funny considering we passed a few others while on the longtail boat on the way to the resort, but none of them had that same feel. This place was just gorgeous - plus we could see the coral reef from the boat and knew we were in for some fantastic snorkelling! The staff were amazing - I can't fault them. The restaurant and separate beach bar were beautifully but simply designed; very comfortable and relaxed. It was the same with the huts. We stayed in the Coral Beach bungalow, and here lies my only, very small criticism: while the other beach front bungalows are about 300 thai Bhat cheaper, they are the same distance from the beach AND have the added luxury of a large mirror in the room. Our room had only a very small mirror in the toilet, which wasn't much help as there is no real window in there and you are basically working blind. From what I could gather (we had friends staying in a beach front bungalow) the only benefit from the coral beach was that you had a little more privacy - the hut is the furthest from the restaurant and set a little further apart from the closest bungalow - and a toilet that flushed (though you still can't flush paper like many places in thailand). My husband loved the privacy, but I was a girl on my honeymoon and really missed having that mirror :) Aside from that, the rooms have full mosquito nets that really do the job, even if you leave the windows open at night - which I recommend for the cool breeze. Even though you only have electricity from 6pm until around 4-5am, you really don't miss it as you spend most of the time on the beach, snorkelling, cayaking, or just lazing around in a hamock (there are quite a few on the beach in addition to deckchairs and benches) or at the restaurant or bar. The massages are great too, set up right on the beach and incredibly relaxing. The resort also has its own transport service to Tonsai which is only 100 tbt per person - much cheaper than a taxi boat service from the pier. They run at regular times during the day and you just let them know when you want to be on it and they tally it to your room. That's another great thing: you can charge everything to your room and then pay on a daily basis or right at the end - plus the staff are happy for you to check what you have charged at any time. Ultimately this place was amazing for people who are done with the frenetic pace and pressure of Patong and want somewhere to really relax that is just far away from the main pier to feel you have your own special hideaway, but not so far that you can't easily go there on any given day and do some shopping. We really enjoyed our entire time in Thailand, but our last days at Relax Beach were that special thing that we had been secretly hoping for all along. I would absolutely go back.

“Two nights were more than enough”

Phi Phi Relax Beach Resort

My husband and I stayed at Relax Beach after spending time on Koh Lanta and Koh Jum, and the first thing that struck us was that the staff here weren't as friendly. We quickly realised as we sat down for lunch that the food was nowhere near as good. If you're looking for authentic Thai food do not have the sweet and sour sauce or the chicken with cashew nuts - we were convinced that Uncle Ben was the chef! The green and red curry is better. Cocktails are comparatively very expensive.

We had a beachfront bungalow which looked lovely from the sea and which we were really pleased with. The view was fantastic and the daybed on our terrace was perfect for admiring it. The outlook is full of islands - you can see Bambo Island, Mosquito Island, Koh Jum and some other islands further off.

As the beach is on the East coast it is deprived of the sun from about 4.00pm, so it often felt later in the evenings than it really was. We solved this problem by hiring a kayak (quite expensive and a bit of a cheek when you're paying quite a lot to stay at the place!) at about 3.00 and kayaking to nearby Rantee Bay (which we preferred given the choice of bars/accommodation available - I think you might feel less stranded staying there) and the beach with Phi Phi Island Village (which to us just looked too manufactured - staff were sweeping little stones and pine needles off the beach!).

We tried to walk to the Viewpoint from Phak Nam but the path is quite overgrown and we gave up after 15 minutes.

There were quite a few families with toddlers staying at Relax Beach when we went as well as a few groups of 20-somethings, who all looked to be enjoying it.

For us, it felt too much like a resort/holiday camp we didn't want to be at for us to fully enjoy it.
