One thing you have realize about Mumbai is that hotels are expensive, on par with NYC. The Renaissance is located north of the airport by Lake Powai. The grounds and the facility are extremely nice with nothing bad to say about them. The room was comfortable and very quiet. In the morning you cold hear the call to prayer if you were already awake. Jet lag will do that to you.
The hotel is set back from the beaten path and very secure. They check cars coming in to the compound with armed guards and mirrors that they slide underneath the car. It makes you wonder and feel secure at the same time.
Mumbai is really two very different cities. The old part to the south and the northern new business sections. "Old Bombay" is much nicer, but can be as much as a 2 hr drive away from the hotel on a busy day. Traffic is quite frankly murder. The area of Mumbai that the hotel is located in can be a bit disconcerting with the dirt and filth that surrounds the very nice, and well kept hotel grounds. Two different worlds. If you go, have a private driver it will make a difference.
Speaking of drivers, if you go say hi to Musaf for us. On Holi we rented the hotel car to take us around for 8 hrs and give us a tour. Musaf was our driver and was extremely courteous and knowledgeable. Trust his decisions on what to show you. The car and Musaf cost us no more then about $180 dollars for the day, that included lunch for all 3 of us. Great bargain.
When I return I will stay here again. If you are doing business in the older section of Mumbai to the south find a different place to stay, the commute will kill you.
