“good experience”

Just got back from a trip to CR and would like to echo others' comments. This is a nice place to stay, pretty nice grounds, good location...the rooms have safes but no clocks....like everywhere in CR, waiters work on "tico time" and disappear for long periods but that's just part of the experience -- heck, you're on vacation, stop counting minutes. Or at least I told myself a few times.

This year, the staff glumly told me, the lava is going down the other side of Arenal, so what must have been brilliant views in the past were muted a little.

Check out the waterfall in La Fortuna, it's guide-book worthy and an easy hike, and try out the ziplines, some of the best in the country are here....

“Needs work . . .”

Montana de Fuego Hotel

Feb 12, 2008

This is definitely a 3 star hotel. That being said, I didn't expect opulent luxury or extreme comfort, but I did expect a clean room and competent service. The room was well-worn, but clean. The service level of the staff, however, left a lot to be desired.

On the positive side, the grounds were beautiful and well maintained and there is a great view of the volcano on clear days. The breakfast was pretty good, but nothing to write home about. Also, you get a discount on the tours and excursions offered. The spa is nice- I highly recommend the hot stone massage.

For the negatives: The staff was friendly -just about everyone in CR is extremely nice- but, completely unsupervised, and unresponsive. While trying to schedule a tour with a staff member, we waited for 20 min. while he went to look up some more information. We finally asked another staff member where he was. She told us that he had left for lunch!

Another incidence involved two wake-up calls (there are no alarm clocks in the rooms) both of which never occurred. We also found it odd that we could not get more than one washcloth anywhere in Cost Rica . . . when we asked for more towels, we were looked at like we were totally crazy and had to go retrieve them ourselves from the laundry room.

“Pretty good choice”

I would say given the relative choices for accomodations in the area that Montana de Fuego was a pretty good option. I would say the property is quite nice looking and in a great location, but that the staffing could be better. I thought the front desk was below average. It ticked me off that me and my friend were given a room with one bed when we were clearly two friends travelling together. It just was aggravating to have to complain about this when they could have asked a simple question when we arrived.

If it had not been cloudy, we would have had a phenomenal view of the volcano. But alas it was cloudy and then pouring rain by the time we left. The pool and pool bar are pretty nice. Beware of the $15 margaritas. They have umbrellas, free water, coffee and internet service in the lobby lodge, which was nice. The restaurant was fairly impressive given that this is not a huge property. I thought the food was really good.

We only stayed two nights. The bungalows were pretty nice except they oddly enough did't have a single drawer for clothes or stuff. Location was good with respect to taking tours.

I would stay here again if I went back.

I read some reviews...but i have not seen what was bad about this hotel. its very private as you get your own bungalow. its got a/c shower everything a hotel needs, and you need to remember its a BUNGALOW not a holliday inn or sheraton. its made out of wood, and while its not cold if you want to get that hotel pampered feeling this isnt for you.
rooms were nice, i loved that as i opened the door i can see the volcano, when it was visible.
lots of vegetation that made me feel like i was in a botanical garden, and if you wanted more wilderness, like i did there is a huge trail behind the hotel down to the river. took us 1 hr through a jungle trail where we saw monkeys and a snake but it felt like i was in the rainforest in south america which was great.

breakfast included every morning, is ok if you like omlets fruits and cereal....i mean for the money its fine, and near the next town where you can eat wherever you want.

free internet, and everyone on the staff was very nice. yes they didnt all speak english, but they did their best. one thing i noticed is that not many people spoke well english anywhere i went but they spoke enough to get by.

still i loved the garden and opening the door and seeing the volcano and hearing it make noise. loved it!

While the staff were congenial and we had plenty of square feet, our room right on the highway felt more like a Best Western than a jungle lodge. I admit it rained for our entire 3 day stay, so we didn't glimpse the volcano which we were told was right on the other side of the highway. Mostly the rained leaked in and soaked our belongings and we listened to the cars ziping by all night rather than any jungle animals. I hear the Lost Iguana is the place to go in the area. On the positive side it is close to things and the staff was responsive.
