My wife and I stayed at the Lost Iguana for 2 nights at the end of January, in a Luxury Suite. The room was great, particularly the lava rock outdoor shower and the french doors offering sunrise volcano views. The morning sun coming up behind the volcano was truly awesome. Having a mini fridge was also nice because we picked up some bottled drinks in Tilaran on the way from the Liberia airport. The drive was a little more than 3 hours (not including the grocery store stop).
Walking the property can be a bit strenuous - our room was atop a pretty big hill - but unlike other guests in recent posts we did not encounter any problem getting the shuttle to pick us up. Usually the wait was under 10 minutes. The shuttle will also take you to the top of the property where there is a nice 20 min trail to the Hanging Bridges.
A prior poster mentioned settling for a Luxury Suite because the resort was allegedly full. We booked the Luxury Suite from the start because we wanted the outdoor shower, but during our visit it did seem like the resort was rather empty, so I would have been very upset if I had been told that the regular rooms were booked when that was not the case. The difference is around $70/night. Again, we were not absolutely sure that these type of rooms were available, but it sure seems empty at breakfast, etc.
Overall we really enjoyed the resort, even if it was a little on the expensive side. It's also nicely located if you want to go west to the Pacific beaches from there, as La Fortuna proper is another 20-30 minutes further east.
While in the area we also hiked the Arenal National Park 1992 lava flow, climbed down to the La Fortuna Waterfall, and spent an evening at Ecotermales.
Ecotermales is HIGHLY recommended, particularly at night. It is far more private and secluded than Tabacon or Baldi (not even a sign on the road, and can easily be missed), and the food was terrific. Larger groups were served buffet style, but my wife and I were unexpectedly presented with private tableside waitress service by candlelight, which was a really nice touch.
La Choza de Laurel in La Fortuna is also recommended for more traditional casual, Tico fare (think open air thatched roof and picnic tables with beers and arroz con pollo).
Pura vida.
