“Nice 2 days at Lost Iguana”

Lost Iguana Resort

My wife and I stayed at the Lost Iguana for 2 nights at the end of January, in a Luxury Suite. The room was great, particularly the lava rock outdoor shower and the french doors offering sunrise volcano views. The morning sun coming up behind the volcano was truly awesome. Having a mini fridge was also nice because we picked up some bottled drinks in Tilaran on the way from the Liberia airport. The drive was a little more than 3 hours (not including the grocery store stop).

Walking the property can be a bit strenuous - our room was atop a pretty big hill - but unlike other guests in recent posts we did not encounter any problem getting the shuttle to pick us up. Usually the wait was under 10 minutes. The shuttle will also take you to the top of the property where there is a nice 20 min trail to the Hanging Bridges.

A prior poster mentioned settling for a Luxury Suite because the resort was allegedly full. We booked the Luxury Suite from the start because we wanted the outdoor shower, but during our visit it did seem like the resort was rather empty, so I would have been very upset if I had been told that the regular rooms were booked when that was not the case. The difference is around $70/night. Again, we were not absolutely sure that these type of rooms were available, but it sure seems empty at breakfast, etc.

Overall we really enjoyed the resort, even if it was a little on the expensive side. It's also nicely located if you want to go west to the Pacific beaches from there, as La Fortuna proper is another 20-30 minutes further east.

While in the area we also hiked the Arenal National Park 1992 lava flow, climbed down to the La Fortuna Waterfall, and spent an evening at Ecotermales.

Ecotermales is HIGHLY recommended, particularly at night. It is far more private and secluded than Tabacon or Baldi (not even a sign on the road, and can easily be missed), and the food was terrific. Larger groups were served buffet style, but my wife and I were unexpectedly presented with private tableside waitress service by candlelight, which was a really nice touch.

La Choza de Laurel in La Fortuna is also recommended for more traditional casual, Tico fare (think open air thatched roof and picnic tables with beers and arroz con pollo).

Pura vida.

“Lovely”

Lost Iguana Resort

5 of 5 stars
Huntington, New York
Mar 3, 2008

My husband and kids and I stayed in one of the "celebrity suites," which was very attractive and spacious and had a large balcony with an amazing view of the volcano. This was my favorite of our three hotels in Costa Rica (and also the most expensive). The grounds are gorgeous and we had a nice hike on one of the trails on the property. The property is on a hill but the walk to our room from reception was quite manageable.

The room was very clean but had a bit of a damp smell -- probably inevitable in the jungle.

The staff were pleasant and helpful enough; they were not effusively friendly but they were certainly not rude. The restaurant is lovely, again with the gorgeous views and birds flying around; breakfast and lunch were fine, dinner was just okay. One potential disadvantage of Lost Iguana is that it is at least a 20-minute drive to the town of La Fortuna, so if you don't have a car, you'll be reliant on taxis to go anywhere. We only stayed for two days, and most of our time was taken up with tours we had pre-booked with Sunset Tours (these were excellent). I would have loved to have one more day to just relax at Lost iguana.

“Fantastic place”

Lost Iguana Resort

St Paul, Minnesota

Our family of 4 stayed here on a Friday night and had a wonderful time. The room (#7) was beautiful, we had an amazing view of Arenal volcano right from our bed. And it delivered an amazing lava/hot rocks display that night (though it took until 3:30AM for the clouds to clear!) and a spectacular sunrise, with howler monkeys making their other worldly noises in the distance. We had dinner at the restaurant and it was great - if a bit pricey. The breakfast buffet (included in the room) was delicious. We hiked on the hotel's trails and it's cool labyrinth; nothing spectacular, but good for some morning exercise. The pools - one heated with a swim-up bar and one not - are great for relaxing after hiking to the volcano. Though the staff was a little bit anal about not leaving the pool area with their towels.

You will pay more here than for comparable places near La Fortuna, but you are getting lava views and proximity to the park and Lake Arenal.

“Great property!”

It took three hours to drive to the Lost Iguana Resort from San Jose. We were very pleased with the property and our room. It was very spacious and had a nice balcony with rocking chairs and a great view of the Arenal Volcano. Our room (#7) had AC, a television (although only one channel was in English), a safe, a small refrigerator and a huge shower. One evening we lost power (due to a storm?) and didn't have hot water the next morning. By the time we returned to our room that afternoon, everything was back in working order. We would definitely stay there again!

“The view alone is worth the drive”

Sitting on the porch, watching the volcano, it's totally fascinating and why we chose to stay at the LI again this year.

The rooms are well appointed, the shower large with great pressure. But, it's really the balcony that keeps us coming back.

Great property, just added a spa which I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to use. Prices were reasonable (compared to NYC).

The staff is accomodating, they actually recognized us from last year. The dining room staff became our best friends after 3 nights, the food is just ok though.

Anyway, great spot and we would return here again!
