“A PIT!!!”

Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas

The hotel is a PIT! We changed rooms 3 times because of bugs and air conditioning problems. After 3 moves, we decided we'd live in the a/c bedroom and accept the fact the rest of the villa was not air conditioned. The management keeps moving people from villa to rooms to villa with no intention of repairing the a/c units. At checkout, our bill included daily "donations" to the national parks and surprise, daily fruit platter charges of $15 plus tax and service per platter-even though breakfast was included! If you don't mind dirty rooms, roaches, padded bills, no a/c then Cala Luna is for you!

“excellent hotel, not-so-great surroundings”

Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas

Apr 24, 2008

Stayed here with 2 friends in January of 08. Upon our arrival we were pleasantly surprised to learn that we had been upgraded from a standard room to a private villa, which included a huge kitchen/living area, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and our own private pool.

Having the private villa made our stay unbelievable! We did not have to get to the main pool early to grab a seat (the pool is not very big, and got crowded quickly) and the beach is a ways away (through a gate, across a road, through some trees...).

The Cala Luna is an excellent hotel, but I would not recommend staying there for a long period of time. There are not many restaurants on site, and I would imagine the menu would get repetitive after a while.

The location of the Cala Luna is decent, need to take a cab to get to the main part of town. Be aware that Tamarindo is undergoing major construction of high-rises and apartments. Do not be surprised to see cranes and construction trucks during your stay. The main part of town had the typical souvenir shops, restaurants and some clothes/accessories boutiques.

“Good hotel but ...”

Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas

Mar 21, 2008

We recently returned from the Cala Luna, a very pleasant hotel - in fact an oasis from Tamarindo which is currently a giant construction site with high-rise apartment blocks springing up all around the town. Unless you like views of cranes, loud hammering and banging, and endless heavy trucks streaming through town tearing up the roads, don't go to Tamarindo!

Back at the hotel, the food is excellent, the pool area pleasant and the rooms relaxing, with shady verandahs and spacious bathroooms complete with a huge, two-person, bath. The gardens are attractive and the bar/sushi area a delight for an evening cocktail before dinner by the pool. This is a definite plus as there are no nearby restaurants or bars within easy walking distance of the hotel. The Cala Luna offers a free Internet service but only one terminal, so it gets busy.

The immediate beach area is rocky and not suitable for swimming but improves further from the hotel and swimming is possible if you are prepared to walk.

A word of warning - power and electricity can on occasions be cut off from 8.00 am until 4.00 pm throughout the whole Tamarindo area.

“Great Little Spot”

Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas

4 of 5 stars
Vancouver, Canada
Mar 19, 2008

I stayed at the Cala Luna Hotel for 2 nights in March. The food was excellent, the service was great and the rooms very very nice. It is very relaxed (no night clubs or loud music) which was exactly what i was looking for. It is about a 15 minute walk from town or a 2-5 minute cheap cab ride.

the only downfall is the pool area is quite small and there are not a lot of chairs - particuarly in the shade. There were not that many people there when i was there so it was oaky but if it were crowded i could see it being a problem. Other than that it is a great little hotel
