We struggled to find a place to stay in Tamarindo, but we were traveling around the Christmas holiday, so that made sense. We were trying to save some money, and now I know we will never repeat that mistake.
We checked in and exchanged glances when we saw the nasty sheets on the mattress, but headed to the beach deciding to make the best of it. For some reason, the fuse to our cabin had blown when we got back and there was no power, and no air conditioning.
The owner insisted she would have an electrician out that evening so we went to dinner. Not much you can do in a dark, hot room. When we got back, we saw that there was an extension cord running from across teh complex to a big industrial fan in our room. We had to go down teh street to buy candles and matches so we could get ready for bed and then we tried to sleep.
I literally tossed and turned all night, waking up every 45-60 minutes. Finally at 5:45, we packed our bags and cancelled our second night at the hotel. The owner gave us our money back, no questions asked, but it was just not a good situation. We totally overpaid for another hotel down the street, but it was the only one with any vacancy and at that point, we just didn't care.
Maybe our stay in Tamarindo was soured by this experience, but the whole town was dirty and dusty and full of obnoxious American tourists. I guess we like a place with a little more local flavor. We will go to Bocas del Toro, Panama any day over Costa Rica.
