We stayed in Cabina Pizote and Cabina Almendre. Both were faantastic, but Almendre is located in the tropical garden backing up to the rainforest. Nighttime is kind of intimidating with all of the jungle noises. The walk to the restaurant for dinner at 7:00pm is in the dark both ways, you must have a flashlight. It is beautiful there. We saw toucans, coatis, agoutis, parrots, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, capuchin monkeys, squirrel monkeys and many other beautiful and unusual birds. However, I much preferred the Pizote. This cabina faces the ocean and the view is out of this world. We saw the same array of wildlife, but also the scarlet macaws - who were apparently roosting in the trees lower on the cliff from our cabin. Taking a shower outside with the monkeys staring down at you is really kind of fun!

The trails range from easy to very challenging. Take their advice and stop, look and listen to what is going on around you. We saw the incredible blue butterlies, sloths, courassow birds hummingbirds only because we were quiet and constantly looking around in the forest. The Pacific Trail is challenging, but the beach below is beautiful.

The food was fabulous, the staff was very helpful and attentive. Definitely worth a second trip!

“Fun stay in Casa Blanca!”

Bosque del Cabo

Our family of four had a wonderful stay at Bosque del Cabo.
We loved the nature, the trails (especially Pacific Trail with it's waterfall, tidepools that turn into natural hot tubs at low tide and natural beauty and the Golfo Dulce Trail (we love the reward of a beach at the end of our hikes!), the food (especially breakfast and lunch) and the grounds.

We stayed in Casa Blanca, a two bedroom, two bathroom house with living room and kitchen (which we didn't use, other than the refridgerator) and an amazing deck. To manage expectations, Casa Blanca itself is pretty basic, dark inside but very clean. We really only spent time indoors to sleep and shower. Our time was spent on the huge deck which has a nice view of the Pacific and tons of comfortable seating (2 hammocks, 2 lounge chairs in the sun, 2 lounge chairs in the shade, a dining table with chairs and 4 other chairs). The deck and the fact that it is a very short walk to the lodge (no issue with that at all, just bring flashlights for walking home at night) are what make Casa Blanca. It would be hard for me to try a cabina now after having all that space.

A few tips if you stay at Casa Blanca: buy some beverages to keep in the fridge and some snacks (keep these in ziplocks), bring a travel mirror (I couldn't see much in the master bathroom), some small candles were nice to have, I used them in the bathroom to see and they added to the atmosphere. Lastly, we brought some string and clothespins. It was great to hang up clothes, bathing suits outside to dry.

We stayed closer to Puerto Jimenez at the Black Turtle Lodge for our first few nights so we did the animal santuary and kayaking in the mangroves from there (highly recommended tours), at BDC the only tour we did was horseback riding which was really fun! You ride down a stream, through the rainforest and then out onto the Pacific Beach. We were the only people on the beach at the time!!! The rest of the time there we just hiked Bosque's wonderful and incredibly well maintained trails.

We had four fantastic nights at Bosque del Cabo. When I think back on it, I can't believe how much we did and saw in that time.
So much wildlife and natural beauty! I can't wait to return!

We stayed at Bosque for our honeymoon about a year ago, and I can't believe I never wrote a review. We absolutely loved bosque-- such a beautiful, relaxful environment. The wildlife was truly incredible and plentiful. I especially loved the scarlet macaws and toucans everywhere. The food was AMAZING. We would look forward to every meal. The week we were there, it was incredibly hot (we were told hotter than normal), so the only negative was the lack of a/c, (although if it had been a bit cooler, I loved the open air environment) and the pool could have been a bit larger.

That being said, I don't know that this was an ideal honeymoon spot (for us). Lets just say that the extreme heat and lack of a/c didn't especially bring out the romantic side of my husband and I. It is a wonderful location, and we do hope to go back. However, just realize this is an ecolodge, not a luxury resort. We woke up on our last night with this crazy little mouse stuck in a mask on the wall, which we had to free. The night before, someone in another cabin woke up with a large snake by their bed. The great thing here is that you are totally one with nature, but that can also be terrible if not what you enjoy.

Anyway, tremendous experience overall.

“Great place with weak guides”

The location, the room (cabin) the food and the activities are wonderful. You can see monkeys coatis and aguttis right from your room. You can take long walks right out your room to the rain forest.
The food was great with many choices and varieties .
My one complaint was that the guides were very poor and burnt out. They were not open to questions and did not seem willing to engage with the guests, a real difference from Lapa Rios(a lodge in the same area)

“Casa Miramar, quite an adventure”

Bosque del Cabo

Feb 22, 2008
3/3 found this review helpful

My husband and three children (11,8,7) recently stayed 4 nights in Casa Miramar at Bosque del Cabo. The great reviews are true, its a very special place and we had a fabulous time exploring the lodge and grounds. We stayed in Casa Miramar one of the houses for rent there. Its an odd but beautiful house, looks remarkably similar to Fred and Wilma Flinstone's house in Bedrock, open round holes for windows and all. While we had a great time here there were moments that were almost too much for this family of sissies from NJ. Our daily wildilfe interaction consists of a very friendly dog and squirrles in the backyard. Miramar is 1/2 mile to the lodge, 2/3 of that distance is up a steep hill if heading back from dinner. Its a long, hot walk and at night its a long, hot DARK walk. There are many interesting creatures to observe along the way but it was at times a bit scary for us. Also, my little guy got sick while we were there and one night we asked for help getting back to the house (he had a fever of 101). We were told "sorry, wish we could help" (spoken in a very chipper british accent) and left on our own to get him back to the house. They did however help us the next night as he was still sick. Thank you Cindy! Miramar is completely open, its pretty much a 3 sided house and you have to go outside to use the bathrooms. It has its own pool which was key with the kids, I am glad we were spared the mile roundtrip walk to the lodge's pool. The bedrooms are three separate buildings and you have to go outside to get to each bedroom structure. This was a little intimidating for me at night as there were, bats, crabs, gekos, coatis HUGE spiders and god only knows what else around. One morning we woke up to mystery poop in our bedroom, would love to know what creature left that for us. The refrigerator had to be locked to keep the coatis out as they will raid it and eat everything in it, They (or some other creatures) came into the house each night and rummaged through trash, recycling anything they could find. I hope I don't sound like I am complaining, I'm not. We loved this place, we experienced nature as we never had before. We had some great family adventures that won't soon be forgotten. The Pacific Trail and waterfall hike while quite challenging were so beautiful. We got lucky and found the falls, along with a very large yellow snake. We visited the animal sanctuary and were surrounded by dolphins on our boat ride back, a sight that brought tears to my eyes.Being awakend each morning by the howler monkeys was extraordinary. Watching the monkeys swing through the trees for hours an incredible experience. This vacation was entirely different from our usual posh beach resort holiday. Had we known exactly what we were in for we might have chickened out and that would have been a mistake. This was an experience of a lifetime for this NJ family. I hope we will have the good fortune to return someday.
