My wife and I just returned from a 6-day trip to Costa Rica and Bosque del Cabo was, without a doubt, the best out of the three places we stayed at during our mini vacation. We saved the Osa Peninsula part of our trip for last because we knew it was going to be the best part and it didn't disappoint.
The whole reason for going to the Osa Peninsula was to get as far away from civilization as possible. We didn't want the artificial ambiance like the ones littered around Manuel Antonio nor did we want the tourist attractions of La Fortuna. When the Sansa Cessna dumped us off at the landing strip in Puerto Jimenez, we knew we found what we were looking for.
The ride over to Bosque del Cabo from town was typical Costa Rican. The one and only road was not paved and was rocky the whole way. Yes, it's not comfortable, but we weren't looking for comfortable. If we wanted comfortable, then we would have stayed in another part of Costa Rica. The 45-minute ride took us through some of the most beautiful country (and through a couple of streams as well).
Upon arriving we were greeted by a couple of staff members who gave us a quick rundown of the property, then walked us over to our "room". Our first night we stayed in Casa Almendra in the middle of the tropical garden. Almendra is about a 5-minute hike away from main part of the property. Needless to say, it was very, very nice. The house is open on three sides and one can relax and gaze out at the rainforest from either the bed, the hammock or the rocking chair.
Our second and third nights were spent in Vista Mar, which is situated under their main office. The accommodations were not nearly as nice as Almendra, but I am not going to complain because of the spectacular view we had of the Gulf right outside our door. I spent countless hours on the hammock looking out at the gulf and loved every idle second.
When I wasn't lying on the hammock, I was on the trails with the wife. We hiked the Pacific Trail to get down to the beach as well as a couple of the other trails at Bosque. None of the trails are terribly long and can easily be traversed with nothing more than a pair of tevas. We brought our hiking boots and used them once during the entire stay.
I was just about ready to wrap up the review when I realized I haven't mentioned the food at this place. To say it was the best food we had in all of Costa Rica would be a massive understatement. Every single meal they served were delicious! The cuisine reflected the environment we were in -- all natural and as fresh as can be. My wife isn't certain she wants to return to Bosque del Cabo next time because she wants to stay closer to Corcovado, but she loved the food and might be willing to compromise just for the food. =)
As you may have guessed already, we were morbidly depressed after we checked out and didn't really want to say much during the ride back to the Puerto Jimenez. Instead, we rode quietly taking in as much as possible of this part of Costa Rica. We'll be back!
