“Don't expect much”

Tudor Hotel

2 of 5 stars
Cape Town
Jul 22, 2008

My husband and I stayed at this hotel in July 2008. I booked the room for one night only via the telephone the day before. Upon arrival, we were informed that there was no booking made. After this was cleared up, we were booked in. There was no toilet paper in the bathroom. There is no room service, i.e. food to order (only a drinks menu, which was also not in the room). The hotel has no parking. There is secure parking two blocks away at the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital (so you have to walk with your luggage). The breakfast was terrible - Cereal, yoghurt (two of each), some deli meats and a croissant. Hot breakfast is omelette, eggs, bacon or sausage with tomato. Not a big variety at all! I suppose you get what you pay for, but after having travelled a bit and sleeping in other 3 star hotels, I was very disappointed with the Tudor.

“Right in the middle of it all.”

Tudor Hotel

4 of 5 stars
Palo Alto, California
Jul 12, 2008

This is the oldest hotel in the city, but don't worry, it's got modern upgrades!

The hotel is located right at Greenmarket Square, which is an excellent location for walking to the sites. The museums and Company Gardens are about a 5 minute walk, Bo Kaap is about 10 minutes, Long Street is a block away, etc. A cab que is right out front, and a ride to the Waterfront is 50 Rand (off meter price, on meter it ranges from 35-55).

The hotel is on Longmarket St., which is narrow with little traffic. I stayed here twice (before and after my safari). The first time had a room in the front with a view of the street and the Square. While the view was nice, it was a bit noisy as I could hear the music from the bar around the corner (I was in this room on a Fri/Sat nights). The second time I had a room in the back, which was just as nice, and much quieter (but I wasn't there on the weekend). Each room is slightly different in terms of size and layout, but the desk will try to put you in the largest one of your requested size. The beds were comfortable, the pillows decently soft, and each room had a coffee pot, TV, small table or desk, wardrobe, shower/tub, clean modern bathroom. All rooms have heat (and you can order a portable heater from the desk) and some have a/c.

Free breakfast was included in the room price and was served in the adjoining Tudor Cafe. This comprised a cold breakfast bar of breads, cereal, fruit, meats, etc. as well as a hot option of eggs, bacon/sausage, and toast. You can watch the merchants set up their stands in the Square while you eat. Service was from 7:00-11:00.

The people at the front desk were very friendly and helpful. They will arrange tours and transfers for you and answer any questions you have. They also have safe boxes at reception as well as an internet terminal (the hotel has a wireless connection as well) although the service was spotty - typical of Africa. To enter the lobby you have to be buzzed in by the front desk, and they ask you to turn in your room key when you are out (for theft prevention). They also have the daily paper in the lobby.

“Nice place to stay”

Tudor Hotel

May 9, 2008

I and my wife were at the hotel for 5 nights Tudor. It is a good hotel for those who just want a place to sleep while visiting this beautiful city. Employees are friendly, and a small hotel until they have a good service for breakfast.

“Cockroach”

Tudor Hotel

Apr 2, 2008

We had an unpleasant surprise when returned to the hotel in the evening. When I switched on the bathroom lights I saw some cockroaches on the floor. When I asked the receptionist to do something about it he gave me the insecticide spray. After treating the bathroom with it more cockroaches appeared...In the morning I counted ca 50 dead cockroaches on the bathroom floor. So, if you do not like those "lovely creatures" may be it would be not the best hotel to stay.

“great location for Cape Town, historical, near Greenmarket shopping”

Tudor Hotel

4 of 5 stars
Glendale, Arizona
Mar 16, 2008

Chose this hotel because it is about 10-15 minute walk from the Convention Center (Cape Town International Convention Center). It is on an intersection of the main road, Long St (at Longmarket). I took the shuttle from the airport which is 100% cheaper than a taxi (120 rand for shuttle versus 250 for taxi)…and shuttle service was quick once you’re led outside of airport (Counter for shuttelt beside luggage carousel). Entrance to hotel is small and you are admitted after buzzing, which is good for security reasons. The area is relatively safe but would advise not to walk alone in dark and less populated parts of the city. Taxis readily available (drivers usually playing cards) and most places 5-10 minutes drive within the city are about 40-60 Rand (7.5 Rand to $1USD). The hotel is located near very good restaurants, and I liked the native African restaurant (Nyoni’s Kraal Restaurant) on Long St just between Shortmarket and Longmarket streets on Long Street. “Mama Africa Restaurant” which is a few blocks away on Long Street is always full at nights and you need reservations (walking along Long St away from Convention Center). Nando’s is also a tasty but cheaper chicken fastfood option which is along Long St as you walk about 5-6 blocks down -- going to the convention center. Hotel is situated right alongside the Greenmarket square where there are good deals on souvenirs and even antique jewelry. The front desk had a friendly young man named “Pule” who readily got me a safari reservation despite all the safaris being booked due to the convention. The other receptionists were also very nice and professional, and a Japanese tourist was so happy and asked me to take a picture of herself and the lady receptionist! The hotel breakfast was very basic though and they would cook you eggs and sausage, but selection is limited but adequate. I also did not see room service except for drinks until a certain time only. Internet reception for my laptop was very weak in my fourth floor room so I had to connect at the lobby or the breakfast room. Apparently, Tudor is the oldest hotel in Cape Town, being there since the 1700’s but renovation has been okay and plumbing was good, and hot water and shower easy. My room was small but bed was big and comfy. Cabinets were available for my clothes and suit, and most striking was the huge safety antique (safe deposit) box where I could put in my whole big backpack! It was great having all my valuables secure and you just bring the key with you. Room was cleaned adequately. The elevator was very small but quick, and I was still able to fit in my humongous Under Armour canvass luggage. Overall, still a good hotel after 200-300 years, with the wood paneling in the room bringing you back to that era and a perfect location to explore Cape Town. Great for single travelers and couples who want a simple established hotel and do a lot of walking around Cape Town. Note: SA very strict with having one page blank “back-to-back” on your passport for visa sticker placement (I almost got sent home! “Amendments page” on USA passport not considered “blank”)
