It's amazing that the major travel books haven't discovered this hidden gem. The Miyazato Inn was far and away our favorite lodging during our three-week trip around Argentina. Jorge and Elisabeth were extraordinarily friendly and welcoming, treating us like long-lost family members in their intimate, immaculate B&B. We knew we were in for a great experience when Jorge raced out to meet our taxi, greet us by name, and help us with our luggage. He insisted on carrying it all, even though we had plenty of hands! Elisabeth greeted us inside with fresh baked cake (yum!) and a pitcher of orange juice. Then Jorge offered a choice of hot teas. We were blown away!
As we enjoyed our afternoon tea, Elisabeth offered help with travel arrangements, inquiring about our itinerary. When she learned we were headed to El Chalten the next day and hadn't made a bus reservation (we mistakenly thought we could just show up at the terminal and buy our tickets), she gasped and immediately got on the phone, making calls to the bus companies. She managed to get reservations for us for trip to El Chalten, and she went on to book our bus tickets to Puerto Natales in Chile, too. Then before we knew what was going on, Jorge dashed out the door to pick up our tickets from the ticket office at the bus terminal. We were totally awestruck at their efforts to help us! They also helped us book a tour of Glaciar Perito Moreno, arranged our taxis and airport transfer, made restaurant reservations, stored our luggage, and even suggested places to visit on our return to Buenos Aires.
We returned twice to the Miyazato Inn during our trip, since we were using El Calafate as our base for trips around Patagonia. Each time we returned, Jorge and Elisabeth showered us with hospitality. We looked forward to each return visit, like we were visiting old friends. Jorge and Elisabeth are just that special!
The Miyazato Inn is relatively new, located in a newer, quiet part of town, where the roads still need to be paved. It's not hard to find, but taxi drivers may be less familiar with it. It's only a short and convenient five-minute stroll into the city center, where there are plenty of restaurants, shops, and services. The home feels brand new, and everything is spotless. The rooms are very nicely furnished and decorated, and the bathrooms were among the very nicest on our trip. The common room is very homey, decorated with various pieces of antique hardware that Jorge collects as a hobby. Elizabeth bakes some great cakes; we sampled one made with fruit and another made with chocolate. Breakfast includes fresh pastries from the bakery down the street, ham, cheese, orange juice, coffee, and tea--all very tasty.
We couldn't think of a better place to stay in El Calafate! It's not going to be long before everyone discovers this wonderful inn, so get in while you still can.
