“Wonderful view, amazing staff”

Tierra de Leyendas

5 of 5 stars
Seattle, WA
May 9, 2008

Tierra de Leyendas is unique. Located a few miles outside of Ushuaia you get a better feel for the amazing surroundings you are in. Laden with history, Ushuaia is the gateway to Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego. From the hotel you have a wonderful view of the Beagle Channel and surrounding mountains. With only a few rooms the hotel feels more like the home of a long-time friend than a business and it is easy to quickly develop friendships with other guests and the staff. With such an informal air surprisingly nothing about the experience has been overlooked. The rooms are lovely, clean, and furnished tastefully while the food is very good. The staff is helpful to a fault and full of local knowledge, trivia, history which they are always willing to freely share and will help you arrange a visit to the nearby National Park, a tour of the Ushuaia prison, a hike in the hills, or a boat trip to a penguin colony. The relaxed, quiet atmosphere is well worth the short taxi-ride into town. Tierra de Leyendas is worth every penny but book early as they fill up months ahead of time.

“Charming hotel and staff in Ushuaia”

Tierra de Leyendas

Just returned from a two-week trip to Argentina and must say that our stay in Ushuaia was enhanced significantly due to the comfortable and lovely lodgings at Tierra de Leyendas. The accomodations were charming, the food was excellent and the owners more than generous.

Knowing how wild the weather can be in this part of the world, Tierra de Leyendas is a beautiful escape after a long day of excursions. The slippers at the front door and books of DVDs are just the start. Kudos as well to staffers Pilar and Claudia who put up with our many questions and were always at the ready when we needed a glass of wine, evening snack, restaurant recommendation or taxi.

When booking, definitely ask for a room with a water view. We didn't have it (the view is still lovely), but our friends did and we were a tad jealous.

It's a top notch place - I will miss the warm medialunas (crossiants) and calafate jam every morning!

“High expectations- Big dissapointment!”

Me and my partner are huge fans of this website and always check the hotels or B&B's on tripadvisor before we book. Since Tierra de Leyendas was rewarded for Best Hidden Gem of South America our expectations were high! We booked a deluxe room (with jacuzzi) to be sure to have a room with view towards the Beagle Channel. We were really looking forward staying at this prize-winning accomodation.

When we arrived from busy Buenos Aires we thought this place would be in a quiet and secluded surrounding, however this was/is not the case at all. It is set between other houses which were under construction.

The main dissapointment however was the dirt road that was right beneath our window (and the hotel itself) with a lot of traffic ( mainly taxi's for guests of the further and much more secluded&quiet hotel Los Cauquenes) causing a lot of noise. Since the rooms don't have double glazing and the dirt road is long, the sound of traffic going back and forth on the gravelroad was very penetrating.

We were very dissapointed about this fact. Instead of feeling "at the end of the world", it was more like being in a city (the room we had in BA was much more quiet)- and cetainly not in South America's best hidden gem. The next morning we decided to check-out and find another place.

We informed the owners about our dissapointment, it is not there fault that Tierra de Leyendas is next to a gravelroad. They said they never had complaints and when they started to get cynical by saying that some people are already put off by hearing
the wind or sea, we left.

During 5 weeks of travelling through Argentina we found a lot more places that truly could be labelled as South America's best hidden gem.

Management Response
Leyendas, Owner-Manager
(Management representative)
Apr 28, 2008
We are very fond of hearing guest suggestions and comments. Since we opened our Hotel we have been adding new services and changing as many details as possible, regarding all our guest suggestions.
But there are some facts that can not be change. It is a fact that we are away from the main street. It is a fact that we wanted to be away from downtown because we were looking for spectacular views and for getting away from the noise. And that is a fact, that this area is the most relaxing and calm area in the whole city.
We are not in the middle of nowhere, we are located in Ushuaia city that has 60.000 habitants, and this area is the most calm and peaceful place in the whole city. And we are not -but no chance- in a main street.
Your stay with us was very disappointed for us too. I was extremely surprised hearing you said that you did want to leave and did NOT want to pay your bill because the noise of traffic did not let you sleep the whole night. I live at the hotel, and I was honest about saying that the only noise that can not let you sleep some nights in this area is the sound of the wind. Of course, there is nothing I can do about it.
Thanks for giving me the chance to say that all what we do at “Tierra de Leyendas” is trying to make our guests happy. We think vacations are a sacred time, and we do our best to give our clients unforgettable moments. And we all have our guests in our memories because they also give us unforgettable moments too. And we thanked them for that. I think you just did not give us –and yourself- the chance to understand what our place is about.

This is a wonderful place to stay in Ushuaia. It is a short taxi ride from the center of Ushuaia. The owners are so friendly and greated me by name as I entered. We were offered tea and given a place to relax and check e-mail, etc as we waited for our room (we were there early). The place is a converted farmhouse and is so unique and very well decorated. Our room was comforable and clean. The did use a strong incense and we had to air the room out, but no big deal. They helped us plan some activities and exchange money. They also phoned and confirmed out flight out - nothing was too much trouble. This was a once in a lifetime trip so we probably won't get a chance to go back, but we definitely recommend this hotel!

“Good Choice”

Tierra de Leyendas

Mar 23, 2008

This was a fine little hotel. We stayed in many places over a month's time in Argentina and Chile and this was a good choice. The hotel is a little out of town so it's a short cab ride into everything ( $5 US). The owner is the chef and dinner was excellent. Even breakfast was very good, which is a rare thing. The staff is friendly and helpful and the common space is cosy and comfortable. Be aware that 2 rooms (I thnk) do not have water views and are somewhat ordinary. So definately ask for water views.
