I spent one night at Los Cauquenes in late January, 2007. Based on that brief experience, I recommend the hotel, subject to a caveat.
I selected Los Cauquenes after being unhappy with the reviews I saw of Las Hayas. Los Cauquenes is very new, and on the shores of the Beagle Channel with nice views of the Chilean Isla Navarino and the Ushuaia airport peninsula (it appears to be part of a very upscale vacation home development). There was a prompt English-language reception and good service getting us to our room. Our room, which was on the top floor, had a splendid view of the water (not all the rooms do – the non-view rooms look out to the dusty unpaved local street). It was well appointed, and had adequate seating and comfortable beds.
We ate lunch and dinner at the hotel, and I was very pleased with the food (lunch was good, dinner was very good (king crab with drawn butter and an herbed mayonnaise followed by tenderloin of veal with a couscous risotto and onions poached in red wine. Dessert was a berry soup with coconut ice cream and a coconut wafer). Breakfast was also among the best 5 of the 15 hotels during my trip.
The bar and public areas of the hotel are nicely appointed, and are welcoming.
We had a rental car – for those who do not, the hotel has van service to and from the downtown (which, having spent an afternoon there, I can’t understand why anyone would really want to go there).
The only unpleasant part of our stay came on the morning of departure, when I learned that the checkout time was at 10:00am. I was so shocked that I didn’t ask for an extension (although when the reception desk staff informed me of the 10am checkout at 9:15am, they did not offer to extend the time) – so I don’t know whether an extension would have been granted (from the immediate prior review it sounds like it would have been -- bad on me for not asking). I found the extremely early checkout so odd as to be bizarre.
Other than the bad taste of having to pack up about an hour and a half earlier than planned, I enjoyed my stay at Los Cauquenes.
