“Beautiful La Posada”

La Posada Hotel

What a gem! The loveliest hotel and best restaurant for hundreds of miles around, it can and should be considered a destination in the 4 Corners region. In April 2008, we had a lovely room (deluxe) that was full of charm and comforts just like the rest of the hotel. It is rare to find a place that exceeds your expectations. But this was definitely one of those times. The owners have done a beautiful job restoring/renovating this wonderful historic building and we wish them every success for the future.

“Fabulous. A real gem”

I stayed at La Posada for three nights in early April 2008. It's a delightful 1930s railway hotel which is being 'done up' by the current owners. Do not let that give you the idea its a building site, it isn't. All the public areas are beautifully decorated with original artworks adorning many walls (the artist is also one of owners). The guide book (free if you stay) takes you on a self guided tour of the building which is worth doing to give you the full history and ensures you see it all. The rooms are smallish (or at least mine was), but it was very comfortable. clean and a nice change from the uniform chain hotels that we are all so used to these days. The decor is supposed to be period (30s in this case), but even if it isn't quite 30,s it really didn't matter, it was cosy. The bathroom was also in the 30s style with black and white tiles, large bath (tub) and shower. Its difficult to convey just how comfortable, relaxing and unique this hotel is.

The restaurant, The Turquoise Room, run by an expat Englishman (John) is as good a restaurant as I've had the pleasure to eat in in the US. Rough Guide says best for 100 miles - I'd say thats under selling it by some margin. Different menu to what you might expect in a desert /railway town like Winslow - although steaks are available - and European portion control so you really can eat three courses if you wish. If you stay at the hotel, its a must. If you are just passing, its still a must!

The Rough Guide lists this hotel as one of the top 13 things to do in Soutwestern US - they are not wrong. Its great!

“An enchanted place with oodles of character and charm”

La Posada Hotel

My partner and I booked on whim during a road trip from L.A to Santa Fe and were delighted with La Posada. The staff were friendly and helpful (though one waiter was a little too chatty) and the rooms were quite unique.

We had such a great experience that we booked again on our return. We had a different room and it was equally unique and individually restored. Both our rooms had jacuzzi styled baths and all mod cons ... And again, lovely staff...

The only thing that let's La Posada down is what's around it - no real hang out zones either in the hotel or in the town, it needs a cozy coffee shop or something, something that makes you want to hang out - still hanging on a bit to its days of being an office (but not over-riding) and it wasn't the right time of year to hang out in the garden - maybe next time ... but we thoroughly enjoyed this hotel - a taste of indulgence and personality and care on a dusty road trip ...

Great place to stop off of you want to check out the PEtrified Forest or the Crater!

“Wonderful surprise!”

My husband and I just returned from one of the most pleasurable travel experiences of our lives. We didn't know what to expect when we booked La Posada. I hadn't researched it, was just looking for a comfortable place to stay between the Grand Canyon and Tucson. We LOVED the hotel and everything about it. It's the most incredibly loving restoration of a magnificent and huge old railroad hotel. The owners have worked very very hard and succeeded in making their hotel a stunning and welcoming oasis in northern Arizona. Our only regret was that we were only booked for one night. We've decided that after we're back home in NY we'll make a plan to re-visit La Posada but the next time by train as the Amtrak actually stops right at the entrance to the hotel. No car, no gas, no horrid airline, just perfect!

“Disappointing And Uncomfortable”

La Posada Hotel

Mar 30, 2008

My wife and I stayed in this hotel for 2 nights in March.

It is an unwelcoming place and customer service is non-existent. The car park is a long way to reception and there are no luggage trolleys until you reach the front door. Nor is there any offer of assistance with heavy suitcases to the second floor. The receptionist was unfriendly to the point of surliness. The guest hand-out warns guests not to trouble management except in case of extreme emergency because management is entitled to its rest too.

The Shirley Temple room may have been suitable for a child but not for adults. The dressing table was so miniscule as to be unusable. There was no easy chair. Apart from the bed and the floor there was only an unupholstered tiny wooden chair and a wooden bench to sit on.

Dinner was even worse. My pork was tough and overcooked but my wife's lamb sampler was a rip-off at $33. The only recognisable lamb was a tiny chop. The rest was a hideous mess on a sweetcorn husk with no discernible meat in it. I complained to the manager the first time I have ever done so in a restaurant. We cancelled our reservation for the next night. If the dining room is to meet its stated target of being the best in the south west it must first rise to the standard of the local Denny's where we had a far better meal at a fraction of the cost.

I applaud the efforts to revive one of the old railway hotels but the focus is all wrong. The intention seems to be to turn it into an uncomfortable museum instead of a comfortable hotel. Does anyone really want to see videos in the public rooms of an untalented artist explaining how she came to paint some amateur and hideous paintings hanging there?
