I just came back from Iceland after a fantastic 2 1/2 days trip (through Icelandair's winter packages). The reason of the trip was for diving in Silfra, the 'crack' between the European and American tectonic plates. Iceland is the only place where the division of the plates are visible on land, since its mostly underwater throughout the Atlantic Ocean.
I flew to Iceland with my wife and teenage daughter, all PADI certified, but with no dry suit experience.
Tobias, from DIVE.IS, picked us up at the hotel and took us to Thingvellir National Park, where the diving site is. After changing at the park's service station we did a short drive to the site, where Tobias took his time in explaining the use of the dry suit.
We then walked ~50 yards to the platform at the ledge of the crack, put our BCD and got into the 32 F water (not cold at all with the dry suit).
The site is fantastic. Swimming along side of both continents is a strange sensation; with clear-transparent water is impressive.
We dove for about 35min, got out of the water and walked back to the van.
After taking our suits off we drove back to town, where Tobias dropped off one our group, and we continued to the Blue Lagoon (and that is another story).
Silfra is amazing: clear water, amazing rock formations on the walls and great sites of the park and its mountains.
I strongly recommend this site as a must for divers.
