“Rustic Charm set in Beautiful Grounds”

I was wary booking this hotel as I had read so many mixed reviews but I succumbed due to the large rooms offered for families. We booked from Dec 28 for two nights so I figured that we would ‘survive’ the experience however bad this place might be! Fortunately for us we had a very pleasant time indeed. We booked only ten days in advance and were offered the largest suite (2 rooms) for $239 a night, which was much cheaper than the advertised price of $309. The hotel was easy to find (Google maps do help though!) and beautifully situated in a forest overlooking the quaint township of Cambria. The Christmas lights and garden of the lodge were spectacular and our family was delighted by the historical and cheerful atmosphere of the resort. We were placed in a four-room block on the lower floor. Our large suite consisted of two rooms: a living room with two convertible double beds, TV and gas fireplace; and a second, equally large magnificent king sized suite, also with TV and gas fireplace, which overlooked the forest. Positives: our kids were happily ensconced in their own room (which was not as attractive as ours) and had their own beds. Negatives: the bathroom was old, compared to the standard of the bedroom, and the towels were scratchy. Fortunately, I did not hear any noise from our ground floor neighbors, but I did hear and feel people walking overhead from the upper level. If this is likely to unduly bother you, request an upstairs room. I heard no noise through the night and the bed was excellent. The dining room is very homely and offers both hot and cold items for breakfast. We ate dinner there one night and enjoyed the ambiance. It is upscale and pricey, but the food is tasty and well presented. After dinner you can enjoy live music in an attractive lounge near the restaurant. Our kids were made very welcome. The pool area is new, and in winter super-heated – possibly too much so, as the kids complained their eyes were stinging after swimming in over chlorinated water. Overall we enjoyed our time here (possibly because I was expecting the worse!) and would recommend our large suite for people who need more space and privacy than the usual cramped hotel rooms on offer. It’s close to Hearst Castle, the elephant seals and many other local attractions.

“Exactly what was expected”

My husband & I stayed here for the first few nights of our honeymoon. My husband is very outdoorsy and we specifically choose one of the older cabins for this reason. The older units are definitely not up to modern-day standards, but it was actually what we had wanted, so it suited us just fine. Cambria is a beautiful, wonderful place and the Lodge grounds are fantastic.

“Recommend Against Staying Here”

Cambria Pines Lodge

The town of Cambria is nice, Hearst Castle is spectacular, the drive up Route 1 is beautiful but the Cambria Pines Lodge is terrible. Highly recommend against staying there.

The room was dirty and old. It should have been remodeled 15 years ago. Granted, we were not expecting luxury accomodations, but a shower with a functional shower head would be nice. It was almost impossible to adjust the temperature in the shower. Towels that were not like cardboard or was it sandpaper would be good, too.

They advertise as dog friendly, but all that means is that you can have the dog with you in the room when you are there. There is no place to dine with the dogs ("oh we have no server for that area"), no common space for you to sit with you dog.

As a result, the first night, we were forced to order room service. HORRIBLE experience. The food took 1.5 hours to arrive, and when it did, 2 of the items were left off the order. Also I ordered coffee with the meal and was told to "drink the stuff that's in the room". I said that I would like some freshly brewed coffee, and they said, well, you are better off with the coffee in the room.

So when we realized the order that came was incomplete, we called back to get a new receipt reflecting the new amount for me to sign. They brought it, but had no extra copy for me. They told me that the old receipt and the new receipt would be at the front desk when we checked out. Yes, you guessed it, no receipts at check out, despite the front desk clerk trying valiently to search for it. So, I told them I would sign for other charges but not for the meal, until I could see that the charges were correct.

Now, any other restaurant manager would apologize for the horrible service and wrong order, and comp the meal. But, they did not. The actually called me at home after we left to tell me the amounts and still charged for the meal - despite me never having seen the receipts.

There must be many better choices in Cambria. I would recommend against the Cambria Pines Lodge.

“Absolutely WONDERFUL Stay”

Cambria Pines Lodge

5 of 5 stars
Piedmont, Alabama
Dec 14, 2007

My mother suggested we stay at this wonderful place when we were on a vacation with my little girl. We got the Forest Suite and had a absolutely awesome time. Our room was beautiful, Our beds were new, the linens were great. The king size bed in the main bedroom was a tempurpedic, the coverlet was a down blanket and the pillows were nice and fluffy. I slept without tossing or turning as I normally do on other Hotel beds. The maid service was there every day to clean and tidy our room. Though I do have to say, they need to be a little more thorough, about cleaning off the table if there's trash or sweeping the bathrooms. Otherwise we had no complaints. A light bulb blew on our deck, we called the front desk and within 5 minutes, someone was there to fix the problem. The staff was professional and very nice. We stayed for 3 days. The food was excellent and we actually chose to stay there at the lodge instead of going down into town for our meals. The bar sent us appetizers with no problems, even though we asked for things not on their menu. Our view was stunning and this place definitely can be proud to have people stay there. They go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. We were there, the night they turned on their Christmas lights. The grounds are stunning. For the cat lover who misses their "baby", the Lodge has 2 resident cats, who stroll the grounds and allow the guests to love on them. Would I go back? MOST definitely. I had to drag my daughter out when it was time for check out. I want to thank everyone at the Cambria Pines for making my daughters thanksgiving holiday a memorable one and one she will never forget.

“Do Not Stay Here”

This place used to be nice but the owner is trying to sell this property. The rooms are dirty and need updating. The breakfast is dissapointing and there are many inexpensive restaurants nearby that are charming and inexpensive. Book a room at the Bluebird in town or anywhere on Moonstone Beach and you will get much more for your $. The manager and staff are indifferent and rude. I would highly NOT reccommend this place.
