Hi Gang!
I just can't put into words how wonderful my flight was with Vic in the SNJ, but I will try. The first thing was thinking of the brave pilots who fought in WW II and who may have actually trained in the very same aircraft I was riding in. So much history. This was especially poignant as I looked out over the Pacific from 4,000 feet on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. As a retired Navy man myself, I got a little choked up imaging planes similar to the one I was in battling over the very same ocean below me. I was honored to be able to share the cockpit with those fighting ghosts of the past.
After turning inland I was offered the controls. Now flying an airplane, not just flying in a plane, has always been one of my dreams. I LOVED IT! We had very smooth air and the SNJ was such a stable and responsive girl, it was my dream and I was living it.
Now having immersed myself in the emotions, history and realizing my dream, I thought could this get any better?
IT DID!!!
At this point, Vic announced it was time for some "maneuvers" and said I was welcome to follow along on the controls. I declined the control offer (A bit chicken on my first flight) but gave Vic an enthusiastic YES on the acrobatics.
I wish I could describe it!! We went up, down, over, under and everything in between!!! I thought before the flight that this might be a little too much for me but the combination of a wonderful plane and Vic's skilled airmanship I was never afraid and experienced such a state of joy I was practically in tears!! So you could imagine my response when Vic asked if we wanted to do even more "advanced" maneuvers!!!! I can not describe it! I don't think even a video could of captured the moment.
After the thrilling acrobatics, we did a few simulated strafing runs at low altitude. That was when you really knew you were hauling butt!!!!!
Again Vic showed his experience and skill. But alas, it was time to head back to the ranch. Vic greased the old SNJ in smoother than any "tube" (my slang for a commercial airliner) I have flown in and taxied right up to my awaiting family, who were very much relieved I was back in one piece.
Honestly, and I know this is a little long, but with all the worries and stress in life (I am the father of a 16 year old daughter who just started driving), for a few precious moments, soaring above the earth, I forgot all those worries and experienced true joy.
THANK YOU ALL for such a wonderful time! Take Care and hope to see you again soon.
Dan
