“Great Getaway”

Alegria Oceanfront Inn and Cottages

Stayed at the Alegria two nights in the main building, second floor. Incredibly picturesque view of the ocean and beautiful landscaping from our deck. A fireplace, an outdoor hottub, a private walkway to the beach, a beautiful gourmet breakfast. Would come here again in a heartbeat.
Not for those who prefer Hiltons and Westins, by the way. Great unobtrusive helpful hosts..........

We recently returned from Alegria where we stayed in the "Treehouse" cottage. This Bed and Breakfast is a really relaxing place to stay, somewhere you can really get away from it all. The views of the ocean are stunning and the owners are friendly without being overbearing. We would love to return and I think if we did, would try one of the cottages nearer the ocean (eg Cove cottage) as the one downside to the Treehouse cottage is that it is right by the road and you can hear all the traffic going by. That said, the treehouse does have alot of space, a log fire and a very large and confortable bed. The breakfasts were delicious and made with fresh (organic) local ingredients. We definitely recommend this B&B!

My wife and I stayed in the Village Farm Retreat, which is not located on the main Alegria Inn's property. We knew this going into our trip, and were prepared to be away from the main house. Upon making our reservation, we were told that our rate did not include breakfast and that if we wanted breakfast in the main house we would be charged $25 (for 2 people) and only if there was room in the house (i.e., people from the house did not show up for their breakfast). We were also fine with that. When we checked into the main house, the person who informed us where the Village Farm Retreat was located did not provide us with very good directions nor were we given a map. In addition, the person checking us in told us that the Retreat did not include maid service during our entire stay, but we were able to contact the main house if we needed any additional towels, linens, etc. This was the first that we had heard that maid service was not included in our rate. When we finally found the Village Farm Retreat and opened the door, we were completely taken a back by the smell in the Retreat. The Retreat smelled extremely musty and dank. Fortunately, the smell on the first floor of the unit was not present on the second floor of the unit (where the bedroom was) so we were able to sleep comfortably. The Retreat did contain some nice extras such as a fridge, small kitchen, and a coffee maker. These amenties made it more convenient to bring food or make coffee. We did feel a bit excluded from the amenities at the main house as we found out on the second day that the second key that we were given during check-in opened the main house, providing access to refreshments and the garden path to the beach. We felt that the owners/innkeepers should have notified us of the second key and its utility upon check-in, but this did not happen. We also felt that the owners/innkeepers were not very warm and friendly, but this may have to do with the fact that we were not staying on the main property. In retospect, we feel that for the cost that breakfast should have been included and folks staying the Retreat should not be excluded.

My wife and I loved this Inn.The whole staff are very nice. The Garden Cottage is so warm and cozy. The breakfast is fantastic. You feel like you are very special when you stay there. We were very sad to leave and cant wait to go back.If you want the best place to stay in Mendocino then call Elaine and Eric. The grounds are so pretty with all the flowers and the Humingbirds were great to watch too.Cant say enough good things about the Alegria.

“Wouldn't recommend for the price”

I feel terrible writing a "poor" review because the owners of the B&B were very accomodating and gracious and cooked delicious breakfasts. However, those that choose to stay at the Inn do need to know that the room we stayed in and the room our friends stayed in both were very musty and smelled as if everything had gotten wet in the room and never been replaced. The second night we were there, two spiders were in our bed and it sounded as if there were critters in the walls (it was as if we were camping!).
For the price of the Inn, they should look into replacing furniture, etc.
