“The Best Place I ever stayed at!”

First of all I traveled the world all over and there are very few places that meet my entire expectations. The house was more than a bed and breakfast it was an oasis. Room service was excellent, the meals were of the highest quality (kudos to the new Chef) and the patronage was lovely. Nothing second rate at all. This is coming from someone who as stayed at the Bacara in SB, the Hilton in Tokyo and the Ritz at Half Moon Bay. I recommend this B&B to all my personal friends and clients which is something I do not do for other establishments. This was quite important as I was a Business Liaison for the City of Pasadena and it was necessary to keep the VIP's happy. From what I understand from talking to the other guests who are usually regular couples any negative comments about this B&B were from dysfunctional indivdiuals who try to skip out on paying their bills who live from moving from one hotel to another and then not paying their bill, (unfortunately those people are out there). But judge for yourself and visit first--you'll be enchanted like my wife and I became and keep returning.

My husband & I booked the "Victoria Room" @ the Bissell House to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. Jennifer (Innkeeper) could not have been more pleasant & hospitable. We had a great time. Loved the pool, the house itself, the breakfasts & the warm welcome. I would highly recommend the Bissell House. I would also like to praise both, Jennifer & Juli for a pleasant stay. They work endlessly to keep up with the demands that come with owning a B&B & they make it look easy. They always had a smile, fun & interesting stories & plenty of great recommendations, from restaurants to site seeing. Thank you!-The Starrs

“Loved The Bissell House!”

The Bissell House Bed & Breakfast

Aug 4, 2007

I come to Pasadena for buiness on a regular basis. The Bissell House is a real haven for me on these trips ..It is great to drive into the tall green hedges to this oasis. This historic home and garden, is beautifully maintained and lovingly cared for. I love the attention to detail, evident throughout, starting with the large, welcoming entry, to the charming living room (parlor), sumptuous dining room, cozy library extending to the large porch and pool area. The guest rooms I have stayed in have been such a treat, each with it's own unique, elegant furnishings and with beds fit for a king. Plants and flowers abound and there are refreshments available at all hours. Within this delightful period home there are modern conveniences like A.C., computer, and television. The owners have extended great courtesy and consideration to make sure I enjoy a relaxing , comfortable stay. My thanks to Bissell House . I look forward, as always, to my next visit. Nancy Deleray

“Old, dusty & Atrocious service”

The Bissell House Bed & Breakfast

I booked the B&B after reading glowing reviews online. What a disappointment.
At first glance it's a beautiful house in a beautiful quiet location.

But staying there was far from ideal....

Yes its an old house and thats the charm but everything seemed old and dusty. The plumbing was so old that we couldn't get a strong stream of water and taking baths were a time-consuming issue.

I did not enjoy the famed 3 course breakfast one bit. I wouldn't even dare to call it a 3 course meal in the first place. A tiny helping of berries does not constitute a first course by any means.

The swimming pool area was dilapidated and I would never enter that whirlpool. There were used towels laid out all over the dusty and unmatched pool furniture.

At least put some effort to make the pool area presentable especially if you are charging such high rates.

A true disappointment.

But even then I could have excused that if I had received good service.

Unfortunately the service was shocking.

When I voiced my discontent twice to the inkeepers. Their first response was to be defensive, quick to defend themselves, quickly stating that they could not offer a discount obviously anxiously to hold on to the money they had charged me.

I was amazed by such a reactive response to my discontent.

Shouldn't customer satisfaction be a first priority?

No I didn't fight for a refund, at that point I just wanted to get out of there.

So note that. Lack of true service, geniality and concern for the wellbeing of their guests was what I experienced.
Their first priority is MONEY .

Never again!

I did a B& B In San Jose and was delighted by the experience but my stay in Bissell House was SAD . Very unhappy.

Management Response

Because some customers might be swayed by the comments of her review, I must state that we observed this guest & her mother to have had a wonderful time in our inn for more than 24 hours, both amongst themselves & with the other guests. She retained her list of “complaints” for checkout time and we surmise that she had forgotten we had already cut her a significant discount on the room rental at booking when she said she did not want to pay our rates. When I saw she was intending to procure a refund at exit, I reminded her of the discount and that did not appear to make her happy. Of course we expected this review would then ensue!

Ok, here we go...
If there ever are any issues that a guest brings to our attention to rectify, we attend to it immediately. This guest had access to my assistance for the entire time of their visit, called me again at 830pm actually stating they had NO water in their room, I checked immediately & found that yes, thank goodness, we still do provide water with each room and informed them it was operative! They had rented one of our 2 rooms that has an antique deep soaking claw footed tub and those baths do take a while to fill and the pressure is slightly less due to it being a Victorian fixture.

This guest was given early check in (she actually tried to arrive at 730am on a 3pm check-in and join the 14 guests from the night before who were enjoying their stay and gain 2 extra free breakfasts and 6 hours more on the day), she had late check out the next day, a significant discount provided, full breakfast on our “sweet” day of Raspberry Chambord French Toast, (the “savory” day was the day before & she complained about that at exit), she expressed excitement about dessert, then commented how they “don’t eat sweets as they’re from Pakistan”...???…and on came the rest of the few “problems”, even that our “hotel” should match the standards of hotels they’ve been to in Singapore. Of course we're not a hotel and having seen us online prior to booking, she knew that.

Our pool area had 2 towels left by another guest, we simply do not make guests pick up after themselves here, we think getting away from doing laundry is what a weekend off is all about!!! The pool is a very nice one installed some years back and it is to code & clean, we’re told most historic B & B properties don’t even have one.

We do whatever we can for our guests simply because we care & we want to live in this neat old 1887 historic house with interesting folks arriving at all times from around the world. B & B’s do not make money, believe me, money is never the issue here for us! B & B owners are in it for the lifestyle, not financial gain.

Guests love our inn and we accommodate special needs constantly! One just needs to ask unless we are able to foresee & provide it! The one guest party we did have last year that was miserable as they couldn’t smoke inside their bedrooms was provided with a full refund for unused nights, given accommodations elsewhere and we sent them out with a complementary bottle of wine! They literally hugged & kissed us!

For those customers desiring more information about any concerns, please contact me as I am always more than happy to give detailed notes. We hope that the Tripadvisor reader will realize that we have guest books full of glowing results here at our inn, enthusiastic reviews and a horde of repeat customers all who adore this property and our service. We encourage you to call us in advance with any questions if you wish specific and unbiased information about our property!

“Too Wonderful but alas Too Short”

The Bissell House Bed & Breakfast

Too Wonderful but alas Too Short
My Wife and I had travelled the scenic Big Sur Highway 1 from
San Francisco and Arrived in Pasadena Sun 8th July.
I had booked the Victoria's Room at the Bissell House over the net and kept it as a surprise from my wife. She was very excited when we drove into the front yard of the Bissell House after the drive through beautiful South Pasadena.
All tthe information on the site is well collated and helpful including the directions.
After arrival we relaxed with coffee and cake in the lounge before swimming and reclining by the pool and enjoying the gardens.
We sampled the complimentary wines before going out to dine in Pasadena which has a vast array of restaurants and shops.
After a restful night's sleep we had a very tasteful breakfast, chatting with other guests and the owners. We had a last swim after breakfast and sadly had to leave to continue out travels.
Our memories of this too short stay at the Bissell House will last a long time and our story will be passed on to all our friends.
I would recommend this wonderful Inn to all that enjoy that extra treat when travelling or are looking for that extra special surprise stay for that special person in their life.
Enjoy your travels
