“Location, Location, Location!”

Shipwreck Motel

4 of 5 stars
St. Paul, MN
Mar 21, 2008

We stayed 6 nights and loved the location, which is close to everything--shopping, the beach, food, entertainment. Our room was small if compared to a newer, typical hotel chain, but they are very clean, well maintained, and ours was recently updated. The beds are comfortable, the staff was helpful and friendly, and the motel is all non-smoking, which we enjoyed.

Even though we were near everything, the noise level was not bothersome and we left our windows open at night (never used the AC). At first, I was apprehensive about leaving windows open, but by the second day I felt the motel area was "safe." I do recommend following common-sense safety precautions, though; ladies, take a friend with you when you go out walking in the evening, which everyone does, and don't leave valuables in plain sight.

The only real negative about the location is traffic. There's a lot of it on Fort Meyers Beach, so be prepared to practice patience.

“Bugs, Dirt, And Mildew!!”

Shipwreck Motel

Mar 17, 2008

My overall trip to Fort Myers was great the only downfall was the place we picked to stay in. During my trip I stayed in the Cresant Cottage which is a part of the shipwreck and I had a AWFUL experience there. The first night I woke up to bugs in my bed and bites all up my arms. We later discovered that there were Ants everywhere in the kitchen, bathroom, and TV area. Like normal humans the amount of Ants freaked us out so we contacted the front desk and I have never felt so disrespected in my life. We had to call three times before they even agreed to call and exterminator. All they did was yes us to death and say that there was nothing they could do about bugs!! On our third day there we were still seeing the ants all over so we decided to walk to the hotel lobby and talk to someone in person. When confronted the lady at the desk; Connie, and she told us ants were not her problem and tried to kick us out of our room! She told us that complaining about a bug problem was disrespectful to her so she'd like it if we left. Bugs weren't our only problem though, they say they have people come and clean the rooms. No, thats a lie. The cleaning ladies come and make the beds then refold the dirty towels and leave. Not only did we see them do this one day when we were outside grilling but the dead ants stayed on the floor for the whole three days until we went and complained in person. The towels in the bathroom were always wet, and there were cup rings on the table. As though bugs and dirt weren't enough we had one more problem during our stay. Something is very wrong with the shower. I'm not sure if it was due to mold or mildew but whenever we went to take a shower we'd all come out sneezing and on a number of occasions the water burned my eyes so bad i had to shower with them closed. The shipwreck may appear to look nice but beware the people are assholes and the place is a disgusting mess.

“No bad for the money but...”

Shipwreck Motel

Not bad for the money - good location, fresh paint and tiled floors.

My issue was with the owner. She was unkind, uncaring and never backed her employees.

We flew into Orlando on a Wednesday to check out the attractions and scheduled to drive to Shipwreck and check in on Saturday. Unfortunately a person in our party ended up in Florida Hospital late Wed night with a bad lung infection (not released until Monday at 3pm). I contacted them when it appeared there may be a delay in our arrival and the staff was awesome - very concerned and so sorry our vacation was starting like this, they were all very companionate. You can imagine we were concerned about our friend and all three of us still wanting to try to make our reservation.

Unfortunately the owner could have cared less about our unexpected circumstances. I advised her we were willing to lose our deposit but we really wanted to try to get there as soon as our friend was released from the hospital. All she cared about was the money she might lose and there was no mention of our friend’s health issue or our well planned vacation being thrown a curve ball. It should be noted that the owner did NOT lose one red cent in this deal, due to plenty of vacancy we extended our reservation. We ended up arriving on Monday but another member of our party was delayed. However we still paid the extra cost for the 3rd person in our room without that person being there. When the person finally arrived on Thursday night she could only stay two days (left Saturday morning) and we asked the owner about parking. She said it would be $10 per day. When we mentioned that we had been paying for the person and they were not there and maybe she could cut us a break she immediately threw in our face the fact that we had changed our reservations (at no fault of our own) but she couldn't care less. Again they had vacancies and we were the only car in the lot during that time. With an attitude like that we went out of our way to give business to the parking lot across the street, $5 per day, and did not do any shopping in her gift shop.

A little kindness goes a long way and you will not find it with the owner. The staff is great but they have no power to do anything so I can't imagine they last long as employees.

I wouldn't go back and wouldn't recommend it to anyone because of my dealings with the owner but wanted to be fair in my rating.

Nice little Motel right in the heart of Fort Myers Beach, Florida. Can't beat the great location, only a block from the Gulf and beach with downtown shopping right next door!
Motel is nothing fancy, but a cool little funky place that's clean and comfortable...very good value for the money. I'll go back.

“Never Going Back !”

Shipwreck Motel

What a dump ! We booked in advance and the website made it look attractive and affordable. When we got there , the room had an odour that took our breath away, there was blood and urine on the bathroom floor and the room hadn't even been cleaned yet ( we were told it was and had the keys ). The location is ideal but The Shipwreck is much worse than it's name. If you go, please stay away from room # 34.
