“Cute hotel with a great location!”

My husband and I were unexpectedly (but happily) "stuck" in Ft. Myers due to weather. We had a friend that had stay at the Shipwreck before so we checked it out. The room was small but all we needed was a place to sleep and take an occasional shower so we really didn't care. The beach is a very short walk away. I was thrilled to have the canal out back with a grill, tiki tables and lounge chairs. In addtion S.O.B. bar/resturant is across the street has excellent food.

We had stayed at another hotel earlier in the week which was much more expensive and further from the beack. I would definately go back to this hotel!

“Okay place... probably would stay again if for a few days”

We stayed at this motel with my 7 yr old daughter for 3 nights. Personally I found the other reviews on this hotel fairly accurate during my stay.

Location is definitely the selling point... very easy walking distance from stores, good restaurants, and the beach.

The motel itself is kind of cool... it's older but has been nicely refurbished with a more personal touch than typical motels... nice pictures and decor throughout. We stayed in a double queen room with kitchenette.... I think those rooms are nicer, at least in size. It wasn't luxury, but it had utensils, plates, refridge, etc.

Really the only thing that really bothered me about the room was the shower which was smaller than 30" x 30"... it felt very confining and was difficult to move in.

The pools were nice and clean... smaller of course, but still nice for the hotel size. A walk around the back has a great place to BBQ and sit out and watch the small lake.

There are also chairs out in front by the sidewalk and patios to sit and talk to the other customers and watch people go by, which was nice.

This motel is run with an adjoining large souvenior shop. While they do have a separate motel desk in the shop, it did feel like the motel was more of the "second thought" to the numberous shop customers.

The only thing that would make me think twice about returning is the customer service... while most of the employees were friendly they had little authorization to do anything other than as written. No accommodations or allowances are allowed for any changes. I noted several arguements because of this during my stay. One because the person had to leave a day early... the other because the person was still in their room at 11:00 (the check out time). When I asked for addtional bath towels, I was told I cuold only have one set per person in the room... even though the towel were literally falling apart and very small :-S My impression was this part was the mgmt. / owner, which is a shame because otherwise it would be a great motel.

I would probably go back... I liked the uniqueness, clean pools, and absolutely the location... but only if for a few days... otherwise would try to rent lodging for a week.

We paid $180 a night and expected a little more than we got. Planned on staying two nights, but left early. We checked in late and when we arrived to the room, there were windows open and the AC on...such a waste. The rooms were outdated and not clean. Everything was old and dark. I was scared to walk with out my shoes on. We had two rooms and in one room there were bugs in the bathroom. When we told the front desk/owner there were bugs, she said she could exterminate. Hmm..no thanks, we would like to leave. So, we checked out a day early. Well, she wasn't happy with that and we would not refund our money for the second night. She was rude and the whole place just had a creepy feeling.
On the plus side, it was a good location:) Walked to some fun restaurants.

“Not a Bad Experience”

Shipwreck Motel

3 of 5 stars
Peabody, Ma
Mar 21, 2008

After reading very mixed reviews on this site, I booked a 3night stay at the Shipwreck for March 2008. The whole trip down to Florida I was nervous of what to expect of the motel. In all, it was not a bad experience.

As far as location goes, the Shipwreck cannot be beat. It is within 100 yards of the Times Square area of Fort Myers Beach. There are restaurants, bars, shopping, and the beach all right there within walking distance.

The motel itself was fine. We were in a room with two double beds in a separate bedroom. They said the room came with a kitchenette, but it was just a refrigerator, coffee machine, and microwave in the corner of the room. The room was very campy; it had wood paneled walls. It was clean and serviced daily by the housekeepers.

The two things that I will say is that we had a pull out sofa-bed, but no linen for the bed. We had to use the spread from one of the other beds as a sheet on the pullout mattress. Also, the towel rack fell off in the bathroom. The only other complaint was that the walls were very thin, as we could here the people in the next room as though they were right there talking to us.

Overall, it was pleasant experience. The few staff members that we had contact with were very pleasant and welcoming. Next trip to Fort Myers Beach we will probably stay elsewhere, but not because of our experience with the Shipwreck. For people looking to stay right at the beach for reasonable prices, I would recommend this motel.

“Location, Location, Location!”

Shipwreck Motel

4 of 5 stars
St. Paul, MN
Mar 21, 2008

We stayed 6 nights and loved the location, which is close to everything--shopping, the beach, food, entertainment. Our room was small if compared to a newer, typical hotel chain, but they are very clean, well maintained, and ours was recently updated. The beds are comfortable, the staff was helpful and friendly, and the motel is all non-smoking, which we enjoyed.

Even though we were near everything, the noise level was not bothersome and we left our windows open at night (never used the AC). At first, I was apprehensive about leaving windows open, but by the second day I felt the motel area was "safe." I do recommend following common-sense safety precautions, though; ladies, take a friend with you when you go out walking in the evening, which everyone does, and don't leave valuables in plain sight.

The only real negative about the location is traffic. There's a lot of it on Fort Meyers Beach, so be prepared to practice patience.
