We had a wonderful stay at the Bottle Inn. My fiance and I had a 7 night stay at this quaint little B&B and we wouldn't change a thing about it. They're about to go through a major renovation until September, so we can't wait to go back and see the changes.
We arrived and were greeted by Dennis, who gave us a quick tour of the home and supplied us with a map of Key West, complete with points of interests and directions. He escorted us upstairs to our room, room 4, and we immediately felt like we were in Key West. Our room had the typical Key West colors--white, pink, and turquise. It was immaculate--spotless. We were VERY pleased with the cleanliness of our room througout the stay. If you're not convinced they're cleaning your room, just check out your bathroom daily....they even change the bathroom carpets. Spotless!!!
The B&B is very quiet at night, at least in our room. There was an occasional buzz from the A/Cunit outside, but nothing to complain about. If you're a light sleeper, just bring some earplugs "just in case". The rooms really are very quiet. We didn't hear any of the other people in the home, and all 8 rooms were booked the entire time. If there as one thing we would change about our room it would be the size of the shower--it was quite small (3 feet by 3 feet) but really, it's an old house and you can't expect a grand bathroom! I don't know what the other reviewers meant about the water temperature...ours was piping hot.
The innkeepers do not reside at the B&B, so in the evening you are left pretty much to yourself. The refrigerator in the dining room is stocked with soft drinks, beer, milk, juice, and yogurt and you are encouraged to help yourself. There is a large refrigerator on the back porch where you may keep your own snacks and things (be sure to label them), and there is also an ice machine. We did not make use of the hot tub on site, but there is one. Beach towels are readily available for your use, as is a beach pass (otherwise you have to pay to get into Fort Zachary Taylor beach, the nicest beach) and bicycles, though we had our own. Make sure you bring a bike lock if you're bringing your own bikes--we were told that they WILL be stolen!
In the morning, breakfast is an extended continental breakfast. There was always an elaborate fruit tray (orange slices, grapefruit, melon, berries, etc,.) a well-stocked bread basket (baguette slices, english muffins, bagels, sliced bread), pastries, hot mini-quiches, instant oatmeal packets, various cold cereals, and hard boiled eggs. Be advised, if you are looking for a B&B where breakfast is served to you and you want a hot meal, this is not the place for you. Fortunately for us, we were hurried to begin our day, so we were happy to grab our breakfast and go. We did eat out for breakfast twice, though, simply because we wanted some hot eggs--but again, this is nothing to complain about, as the breakfast spread is superb.
Some pointers on where to go for dining: we didn't try Cafe Sole as many other reviewers suggested...it was not our kind of menu. We LOVED Mangia Mangia just up Southard Street...they had fabulous Italian food. We also got sandwiches from 5 Brothers. Make sure you try the Conch Republic Seafood Company at the historic waterfront--great seafood, reasonable prices, and a fantastic view of the harbor. For breakfast, if you wish for breakfast out, the Cheeseburger restaurant on Duval Street has a wonderful selection until 11am.
We'd suggest the Conch Tour Train, even though it's a bit on the pricey side. You'll be given a glimpse of Key West history that you would not know if you didn't take the tour. We also suggest the Original Ghost Tours of Key West--FABULOUS!!!!! Again, very historical and if you believe in haunts it's an added treat. We found a hidden local treasure, also. If you have an open mind and you want a fun evening out, check out the La Te Da cabaret...tickets are relatively inexpensive ($28 / person) and you WILL be entertained by the fabulous Randy Thompson & Mark Watson. Make sure you go to Mallory Square for sunset, of course.
As for beaches, Fort Zachary Taylor is definitely the most beautiful and the cleanest. It is not a sandy beach, but there are plenty of picnic tables and grills. There is a concession stand, showere, and bathrooms as well as a booth to rent snorkle equipment (this is THE beach for snorkeling---TONS of tropical fish out by the rocks). Just make sure you ask for the beachpass befor you go so you don't have to pay for parking. On your way in to the beach you can go check out the USS Mohawk, a WWII navy ship. You can get on and go walk around (for a fee of course), and it was a nice experience. If you want to fish, we suggest Mallory Square, not Higgs Beach pier as you will hear....the Higgs Beach pier is beautiful to look off of (again, tropical fish), but is filled with boulers and rocks and little fish that will gobble your bait before you catch anything. Mallory Square has some good fishing spots.
It's obvious we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We can't wait to go back!!!!!
