My wife and I are frequent travelers and have stayed at many luxurious 5 star hotels around the world. Sunset Key ranks up there amongst the best.
It is expensive - probably the most expensive hotel on Key West, but it is worth it if you can afford it. We were there in mid September the same weekend that 20,000 bikers descended on Key West for the annual "Poker Run". Bang goes our quiet weekend we thought. However, the island was tranquil. It was their quiet period, but for 2 days we were the only ones at the pool, and the beach never had more than 10 people on it. The waiters came around with free drinks, free fruit kebabs, glasses of ice water etc - nothing was too much trouble for them.
The 2 bed villas were fantastic. 3 bathrooms - each different - one with a great shower, one more standard and one with a tub. The only thing that could have improved them would be a jacuzzi tub. Each villa could comfortably sleep a family or party of 6. The contintental breakfast was so-so, but it was nice to wake up to it delivered on your veranda every morning, along with the fresh orange juice stocked in the fridge the night before.
We had a partial ocean view (villa "sea grapes") which was one row back from the ocean - looking directly at Key West. We would sit out most nights after staggering home from the Key West restaurants and bars and enjoy a nightcap while looking at the ocean.
The launch was running every 30 minutes, which was never a problem. We were only given a safety briefing once - which was when the coastguard were patrolling the waters. This may be why other reviewers were asked for i.d. The launch was air conditioned and very comfortable.
We went to Key West 19 years ago, and it has definitely "tamed down" a little since then. I feel KW is getting a little too touristy for my taste (plenty ot T-shirt shops), but if we went again, we would definitely stay at Sunset Key.
FYI - if you don't mind wandering off the beaten trail a little - I definitely recomend Santiago's Tapas. Wonderful Sangria, mini lamb chops, yellowfin Ceviche, hummus etc. Best I've ever had.
