Sunset Key Guest Cottages

We just returned from spending a week at the property. It was one of the most perfect vacations. The service was great and the cottage was great. There were only a few things that could have make the experience perfect. The cottage was a great size. There were five of us and it never felt overly crowded. The kitchen was tiny but we don't cook when we are on vacation anyway. They installed wireless internet in the cottages while we were there which made it nice to not have to be wired to the wall with my laptop. It was great to have a 3rd bathroom. It made showering much easier. There was a nice lcd tv in the living room but the tv signal was pretty lousy. They need to have HD boxes in the cottages at this price point. The only other inconvenience was the electronic lock system on the doors. It took a little while to figure out how to lock the doors correctly and our keys had to be reset a few times during the week. I think part of the problem might have been phones deactivating the keys???

The pool and beach were both great and not too busy which was nice. The Flippers bar was perfect for lunch most days and pretty reasonable priced for a resort. Lattitudes was great for dinner one night. The shuttle boat was fine to get to Key West several times a day. I only missed it once and had to wait a half hour to get off of the island. The only real complaint with the resort is the exercize facility. There is only a workout facility at the Key West hotel so you have to take the shuttle to get to it. Once there, it was a disappointment. It is a small, cramped and overly warm room with very limited equipment. Yes, I want to work out while I'm on vacation and those facilities are important to me.

“Cute little island”

Sunset Key is a nice respite from Key West. It is a very nice little island that is very easy to get to and the water taxi runs 24 hours a day. We never had to wait. The cottages were very cute with tin roofs and ours had large verandahs. They were nicely appointed although our second bathroom was small, however, we did have three baths in a two bedroom. Not a big selection on food, but dinner there was wonderful and we also had a couple of extremely good lunches. The staff was nice and the grounds were impeccable. Just one word of warning, there were LOTS of children and only one pool.

“Loved the Sunset Cottages!”

Sunset Key Guest Cottages

My family and I stayed at the Sunset Cottages in the begining of January. From check in to check out the service was excellent. When you check into the Sunset Cottages you have to check in at the Westin on the mainland of Key West. Once check in is complete all of your luggage is sent over on a boat and you don't have to worry about a thing. Once we arrived on the island we were greated by hotel staff that gave us a tour of the property and explained everything in detail. The cottage itself was spacious and beautifully decorated. There was more than enough space for the four of us that stayed in the cottage and we were just steps from the beach. Each morning the hotel provides a complimentary basket filled with fresh fruit and muffins which was a really nice touch. You can also order groceries through the hotel which are priced very reasonably. I recommend doing this as there is only one restaurant at the hotel. Transportation from the island is incredibly convenient, there is a boat that will take you over every fifteen minutes until midnight at which time the boat is on call. When we used the on call method for the boat we did not have to wait more than five minutes. All in all this was a great experience, I would not hesitate to stay at this location again.

“Great Trip in Key West”

The hotel was excellent and a nice getaway from the crowds and rowdiness in the drunken cruisers in Key West. Go into town after the last cruise ship leaves, and you'll have a great experience. The rooms were nice and clean, maybe could use a little updating and the restaurant was great. The service was a little lacking.... not quite up to Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton standards; however I would recommend the hotel nonetheless. See the 10 candid traveller photos I posted.

“Not bad ... Used to be better”

I guess when you consider the fact the resort is completely isolated form the rest of the world, its worth an extra star. This is perhaps the most appealing characteristic about this resort. The facilities are nice but getting tired after my 6th visit over the last 8 years. The service was good and efficient. The beach is beautiful and private. The food at the main island restaurant, Latitudes is excellent but way over priced. The views are spectacular and its a nice change from the Jersey tourists and the cruise boat crowd on the main island of Key west. If you have a lot of money to burn and you like Key West but are tired of the same ol crowd, its a refreshing change. But that change comes at a significant cost. I would recommend a nice BB which offer exceptional service at a great price. I am less impressed after every visit. The 3 bedroom condo we usually stay in hasn't been upgraded in the least in the least 8 years. Also, prepare yourself for a 17% total tax when its all said & done. At over a grand a night depending on the room, it adds up.
